A 12th-century Muslim scholar drew a world map so accurate it stayed unmatched for 300 years.
In the year 1154, an Arab scholar in Sicily completed a project that had taken him roughly 15 years. It was a map of the entire known world, from Iceland to China, and it was so far ahead of anything else in existence that it would remain the most accurate world map for the next three centuries. Its creator was Muhammad al-Idrisi, and his masterpiece is remembered today as the Tabula Rogeriana.
Al-Idrisi was born around 1100 in Ceuta, on the North African coast where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic. He came from a noble family with Andalusian roots and studied at the famous university in Cordoba, then one of the great centers of learning in the Muslim world. Over the course of his life he traveled widely across a Mediterranean divided among competing Christian and Muslim powers, gathering the kind of firsthand knowledge that would later fill his maps.
His path eventually led to an unlikely partnership. In 1138 he arrived at the court of Roger II, the Norman king of Sicily, who had recently taken the island from its Muslim rulers. Rather than treat al-Idrisi as an enemy, Roger recruited him for an ambitious task: to assemble everything then known about the shape of the world into a single, definitive map. It was a collaboration between a Christian king and a Muslim scholar at a rare cultural crossroads.
How the Tabula Rogeriana Was Made
The work was painstaking. Al-Idrisi and a team of collaborators spent about 15 years examining existing maps and interviewing travelers who had journeyed to distant lands, cross-checking their accounts against one another. He drew on three centuries of Islamic mapmaking knowledge that was largely unknown to European cartographers at the time, along with translated works of the ancient Greek geographer Ptolemy.
The result was more than a single map. Al-Idrisi produced a full atlas of 70 sectional maps, each paired with detailed written descriptions of the cities, roads, rivers, and mountains in that region. The complete work carried an Arabic title that translates roughly to “The Book of Roger,” honoring his patron.
The centerpiece was extraordinary. Roger had the composite world map engraved onto a massive disc of solid silver, around two meters across and weighing close to 400 pounds. That original silver map was lost long ago, but the accompanying atlas survived through later copies, ten of which still exist today, with the earliest dating to around 1300.
Why the Map Was So Far Ahead of Its Time
What made the Tabula Rogeriana remarkable was its accuracy and scope. It was among the first maps to show most of Europe, Asia, and North Africa together, depicting the Eurasian continent in its entirety along with the northern part of Africa. A staggering number of cities were labeled, especially along the coasts, reflecting its deep interest in sea trade routes.
Al-Idrisi’s grasp of the planet itself was impressive. Following Ptolemy, he divided the world into seven climate zones, and he calculated the earth’s circumference at about 23,000 miles, remarkably close to the actual figure of nearly 24,901 miles. He described the spherical earth as hanging stable in space like the yolk of an egg.
One feature tends to surprise modern viewers. Al-Idrisi drew his map with south at the top and north at the bottom, the reverse of what people expect today. When the map is rotated 180 degrees, its resemblance to the actual geography of Europe, Africa, and Asia becomes strikingly clear, which is part of why it held up for so long.
A Map That Guided Explorers for Centuries
The influence of the Tabula Rogeriana stretched far beyond Roger’s court. For the next 300 years, it stood among the most accurate geographic works describing the known world, consulted long after its creator had died. It was a product of the Islamic Golden Age at a time when much of Europe had seen scientific progress slow.
Its practical value lasted into the age of exploration. The geographic knowledge al-Idrisi assembled later helped guide the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama on his sea voyage to India. Centuries after a scholar and a king pooled their knowledge in Palermo, the map they created was still helping sailors find their way across the world.
