Spain is the 2026 FIFA World Cup champion. The team beat Argentina 1-0 in a tense extra time finish on Sunday, claiming its second world title after first winning in 2010. The match at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, stayed scoreless through a grinding 90 minutes before substitute Ferran Torres broke the deadlock in the 106th minute, and the stadium erupted the second the ball hit the net.

Torres had only been on the field since the 62nd minute. He pounced on a loose, bouncing ball inside the box and smashed a left-footed shot past Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez for his first goal of the entire tournament. It could not have come at a bigger moment. Spain had controlled the match from the opening whistle, piling up shots and corners, but Martinez was a wall in goal and kept Argentina alive with 12 saves, the most ever recorded in a men’s World Cup final.

Argentina made things even harder on themselves late. A second yellow card in stoppage time at the end of regulation sent a player off, leaving Argentina to battle the rest of the match a man down. Even shorthanded, Argentina refused to fold. Lionel Messi nearly forced a miracle with a curling free kick in the final stretch, but Martinez’s counterpart between the posts got a hand to it and turned it away.

The win pushed Spain’s unbeaten streak to 38 straight matches, a run that also includes the team’s 2024 European Championship title. Spain now holds a record no other champion can claim. It is the first team to win a World Cup while conceding just a single goal across the entire tournament, a defensive stretch that will be talked about for years.

World Cup Final Ceremony Brought a Star-Studded Halftime Show

Sunday did not just make football history. It also marked the first time a World Cup final included a full halftime show, produced alongside Global Citizen and closer in scale to a Super Bowl production than anything soccer fans had seen before. Madonna, Justin Bieber, Shakira and BTS all took the stage, turning the pregame buzz into a full-blown spectacle before a ball was even kicked in the second half.

United States President Donald Trump was in the stands for the match and stepped onto the field afterward to present the World Cup trophy to Spain’s players. The tournament itself was historic from the start. Co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, it kicked off on June 11 with 48 teams competing, the largest field in World Cup history.

🚨⏰ Whistle to whistle, half-time in the World Cup Final lasted an absurd 27 minutes and 24 seconds.

Nearly half an hour without football… all for a show nobody asked for. Just get the players back on the pitch. 😴 https://t.co/riwv8dnoT1 pic.twitter.com/wnGyIrM6rG

For Argentina, the loss stings in a way that goes far beyond one match. The team came in defending its 2022 title and left with nothing to show for it. Messi, who turns 39 this year, had been electric all tournament, scoring eight goals before the final. Spain shut him down completely on Sunday, swarming him with defenders and cutting off every passing lane.

A heroic game-winning goal by Spain's Ferran Torres. A heartbreaking end for Lionel Messi and Argentina.

Speaking to reporters after the whistle, Messi said Argentina left everything on the field, but Spain was simply the better team on the day. He still has not confirmed his international retirement, though he hinted before the tournament that this could be his last World Cup. Cameras caught him in tears as Spain lifted the trophy, and that image spread everywhere within minutes.

Fans Flood Social Media Over Spain’s Win and Messi’s Emotional Exit

Social media absolutely lit up the moment the final whistle blew. Spanish fans took over timelines celebrating their second star, with plenty of posts calling this Spain squad the most complete team of the tournament after a nearly flawless defensive run through every single round.

But the loudest conversation online was not really about the scoreline at all. It was about Messi. Fans everywhere debated what this loss means for his legacy and whether the world had really just watched his final World Cup match. Clips of him fighting back tears during Spain’s celebration racked up massive views and shares within the hour, with fans posting tributes calling him the greatest to ever play the game regardless of how Sunday ended.

The match also served up plenty of drama for fans to argue over online. A disallowed Spain goal earlier in the game had supporters furious over the officiating call, and the red card that left Argentina down a man in the closing stretch only added more fuel to the debate. Even the halftime show became its own trending topic, splitting fans between those who loved the star power and those who felt a full concert lineup did not belong in the middle of a World Cup final.

By the time Spain hoisted the trophy under the New Jersey lights, the conversation had already shifted from who won to what happens next. Fans are now watching closely to see how long Spain’s era of dominance can last, and whether football fans everywhere have truly seen the last of Messi on the sport’s biggest stage.
