Dubai will develop a smart medical visa for patients traveling to the emirate for treatment.
Dubai will develop a smart medical visa and more seamless services for patients traveling to the emirate for treatment. The plan comes under a new agreement between the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigners Affairs Dubai and the Dubai Health Authority.
According to reports, the two bodies signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding. Lt-Gen Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFA Dubai, and Dr Alawi Sheikh Ali, Director General of DHA, signed the agreement.
The agreement aims to create an integrated healthcare journey for medical tourists. It links visa, residency and healthcare services from before patients arrive in Dubai through to treatment and follow-up.
Areas of cooperation will focus on facilitating medical visa procedures, supporting health tourism initiatives and strengthening integration with the health insurance system. The agreement also includes developing joint mechanisms that allow members of the Dubai Health Experience to submit medical visa applications more efficiently for patients coming from outside the UAE.
Lt-Gen Al Marri said the partnership aims to develop a more flexible and seamless system that connects residency and healthcare services. Dr Alawi said the agreement supports Dubai’s efforts to consolidate its position as a global destination for healthcare and wellness through an integrated service model centred around people.
Dubai Health Experience Behind the Medical Visa Plan
The Dubai Health Experience, known as DXH, was launched by DHA in April 2016. It was set up as a strategic brand initiative to position healthcare as part of Dubai’s wider lifestyle offering.
The platform gives health travelers access to a network of internationally accredited hospitals and clinics. It also promotes Dubai as a destination for medical care, recovery and wellness. The new agreement ties that platform more closely to the visa and residency process.
Dubai Medical Tourism Visa Rules and Sponsorship
Medical tourism visas in Dubai are currently available for 90 or 180 days. They come with single and multiple entry options and can be renewed if a patient needs extended treatment.
Patients must be sponsored by a licensed healthcare facility in the UAE. The facility handles the visa process and ensures treatment is provided through an accredited provider. Companion visas are also available for people supporting patients during treatment and recovery.
The smart medical visa builds on these existing rules. The agreement points to a single, connected process linking the visa, the residency element and the medical treatment itself, rather than separate steps handled in isolation.
The move fits Dubai’s wider push to grow its medical tourism sector. The emirate has positioned healthcare alongside travel and wellness as part of its appeal to international visitors, and the new agreement is aimed at making the arrival and treatment process smoother for patients coming from abroad.
