A generation of icons is set to take the World Cup stage for the last time in 2026.
This is the one fans have circled for years. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is not just the biggest ever, with 48 teams and 104 matches across three countries. It is the last stand for a generation that has ruled the sport for nearly two decades. When the final whistle blows on July 19, the game loses a chunk of its soul. A constellation of legends is bowing out, with 2026 their final shot at the only prize many of them still crave.
For die-hard fans, this one hits different. These are the names we all have heard growing up. These are the names on the back of the first childhood shirts of most football fans.
World Cup 2026 last dance for Messi, Ronaldo and Modric
Three players link this tournament all the way back to 2006. Sofascore notes that Messi, Ronaldo, and Modric are the only men in North America who also played at the 2006 finals. Between them they hold 14 Ballon d’Or awards.
Messi turns 39 this month and has committed to a record sixth World Cup despite earlier hints he might walk away. He already owns the trophy, lifted in 2022, and now plays at Inter Miami. Argentina open their title defense against Algeria. The big question is whether his body handles the expanded format and the North American heat.
Ronaldo is the oldest outfield name in the field at 41. The World Cup is the one major prize that has escaped him, and he has never scored in a knockout match. If Portugal go all the way, he becomes the oldest player to ever lift it. He is still scoring freely for Al-Nassr and insists retirement is not close.
Modric, 40, plays his fifth and almost certainly final World Cup. He dragged Croatia to the 2018 final and a third-place finish in 2022, and now keeps his legs fresh at AC Milan. Manchester City defender Ruben Dias told FOX Sports he is not convinced this is really the end for any of the three. That alone shows how hard they are to write off.
World Cup 2026 farewell for veteran goalkeepers Neuer and Ochoa
Some farewells were not even planned. Manuel Neuer came out of international retirement at 40 after Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann made the call. Neuer had stepped away after Euro 2024, but a strong season at Bayern Munich brought him back, and he is confirmed as the number one.
Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa got a similar twist. The 40-year-old was not expected in Javier Aguirre’s squad until first-choice keeper Angel Malagon tore his Achilles. Ochoa now plays a sixth World Cup, joining Messi and Ronaldo in that club, and has hinted he will retire afterward. He could feature when Mexico open the entire tournament against South Africa.
Then there is Edin Dzeko. Bosnia and Herzegovina had not reached a World Cup since 2014, but the 40-year-old striker fired them past Italy in the playoffs. For a player with over 150 caps and more than 70 goals, this is a long-overdue final bow.
World Cup 2026 final bow for Neymar, Salah, and more
Brazil fans held their breath over Neymar. The Selecao’s all-time top scorer had not played for the national team since tearing his ACL in October 2023, and Carlo Ancelotti left him out for months. Injuries to other forwards opened the door, and Neymar made the 26-man squad, sparking wild celebrations. He still has to prove his fitness.
Mohamed Salah carries Egypt again at 33, now with Omar Marmoush for support. Sadio Mane, 34, captains Senegal. Riyad Mahrez, 35, gets a rare second World Cup with Algeria after the 2014 finals. Son Heung-min leads South Korea, and James Rodriguez, the breakout star of 2014, returns for Colombia. Virgil van Dijk anchors the Netherlands at what is likely his second and last World Cup, while Kevin De Bruyne carries Belgium’s fading golden generation. Harry Kane, at 32, could push on to the 2028 Euros on home soil, so this may not be his goodbye just yet.
When does the World Cup 2026 start?
The tournament opens Thursday, June 11, with Mexico against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. The 48 teams are split into 12 groups of four. Each side plays three group games. The top two from every group advance, along with the eight best third-place teams, into a new round of 32. The group stage runs through late June before the knockouts begin, and the final is set for July 19 in the New York area.
World Cup 2026 groups: where the legends landed
Several farewell stars share a stage. Messi’s Argentina and Mahrez’s Algeria both sit in Group J. Modric’s Croatia and Kane’s England are paired in Group L. Salah’s Egypt and De Bruyne’s Belgium share Group G. Son’s South Korea and Ochoa’s Mexico headline Group A. Ronaldo’s Portugal top Group K, Neymar’s Brazil lead Group C, Van Dijk’s Netherlands anchor Group F, and Neuer’s Germany sit in Group E. If Portugal and Argentina both win their groups, Ronaldo and Messi could finally meet in a quarterfinal.
So pick your team, set your alarms, and don’t miss a minute. Some of these names will never play a World Cup again.
