An old adage goes, “you are what you eat.” It usually gets thrown around when someone is talking about health, but with Eid al-Adha approaching so fast, we couldn’t help but look at it another way. What if the dish you reach for first actually says something about who you are?
Not quite there yet? Do not worry, we have got you covered.
We all know that one person, maybe it is you, who has a single favorite dish they go straight for at every Eid table, before the tea is even poured. Turns out that plate says more about you than you think. Find your favorite below, see if it sounds like you, and send it to the family group chat to settle who is who.
Do not take it too seriously. It is Eid, after all.
1. Sheer Khurma

If this is your dish, you are the one who keeps tradition alive. For you, Eid does not really start until that first warm bowl is in your hands. And it makes sense, because sheer khurma means “milk with dates” in Persian and families have been making it for Eid since Mughal times. You are the one who remembers the old recipes and calls every relative to wish them. Warm, a little sentimental, and the person who quietly holds the whole gathering together.
2. Biryani

You have main character energy and you know it. Bold, generous, a little dramatic in the best way. You are the one telling stories and refilling everyone’s plate. But here is the small thing that gives you away. The elaichi, that whole cardamom pod you quietly move to the side of your plate instead of biting into. That is the one thing you keep to yourself, even on a day this loud. Eid would be a lot quieter without you.
3. Samosa/Sambusa

You fit in anywhere, with anyone, and you always have. This dish does too. Whether you call it samosa or sambusa, it has been crossing borders for a thousand years, from the Middle Eastern “sanbusaj” to the royal kitchens of the Delhi Sultanate, picking up a new filling in every place it passed through. You will find it on Eid tables from Karachi to Dubai, samosa to some, sambusa to others, and loved by all of them. Easygoing, well-liked, and welcome everywhere. Sounds about right.
4. Kunafa

You are warm-hearted and you do not hide it. There is a soft, gooey center to you, and the people close to you know it well. Kunafa is all about contrast, sweet syrup over salty cheese, crisp on top and melting underneath, and that is you too. A little dramatic in the best way, full of layers, and impossible not to love. You are the one who makes every gathering feel a bit more special just by showing up.
5. Jalebi

You are the free spirit, the one who never moves in a straight line and is more fun because of it. And jalebi has a story you will like. It is not originally from the subcontinent at all. It started as Persian “zulbiya,” written about in a cookbook over a thousand years ago, and was handed out to the poor during Ramadan long before it ever reached South Asia. You will even find it across the Arab world as zalabia. Well-traveled, a little unpredictable, sweet to everyone you meet.
6. Kabsa

If kabsa is your pick, you are the host, the provider, the heart of the home. You are the one whose house everyone ends up at, the one who feeds a full room without breaking a sweat. Kabsa is the centerpiece of Eid al-Adha across the Gulf, a generous spread of spiced rice and meat made to be shared by many. That is you. Steady, giving, and happiest when the people you love are gathered around your table.
Can’t Pick Just One?
If you could not choose, that tells us something too. You are easygoing, and you are happy as long as the family is together and the table is full. Honestly, that might be the most Eid answer of them all.
Because when you really think about it, the food was never the main thing. It was the people passing it to you, the cousins crowded around one table, the one morning a year everyone actually shows up.
Whatever ends up on your plate this Eid, we hope it is a full one.
Eid Mubarak.
