Both days feature screenings beginning at 6:00 PM, giving audiences a chance to sample a cross-section of contemporary Russian filmmaking, from big-budget children’s blockbusters to award-nominated war epics. Here is a closer look at the four films on offer.

The Golden Key: A New Pinocchio Story

Screening on August 29, this 2026 fantasy adventure is a modern retelling of one of Russia’s best-loved children’s stories. It draws on Alexei Tolstoy’s classic 1936 tale The Golden Key, or The Adventures of Buratino, itself a Russian reimagining of Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio. Directed by Igor Voloshin and made with a large budget and modern effects, the film follows the wooden boy Buratino, his father Papa Carlo, and their friends through a series of adventures in search of a mysterious golden key. A visually ambitious family feature, it became a notable box office success in Russia.

Baby

Also showing on August 29, “Baby” is presented as one of the program’s offerings for older audiences, carrying a 16-and-above rating that sets it apart from the family titles on the bill. As a more mature drama, it rounds out the first evening with a change of tone, giving grown-up viewers an alternative to the children’s fare and reflecting the breadth of stories being told in contemporary Russian cinema. Audiences are encouraged to check the trailers made available by the organizers ahead of the screening to get a sense of the film.

Angels of Ladoga

Screening on August 30, this 2026 war drama is among the most acclaimed titles in the lineup. Directed by Alexander Kott, it tells the story of the heroism of iceboat sailors during the Siege of Leningrad, one of the most harrowing chapters of the Second World War. Set in November 1941, the film follows characters who evacuate children across the dangerously thin ice of Lake Ladoga. It served as the opening film of a major Russian film festival and offers a sombre, historically grounded counterpoint to the weekend’s lighter offerings.

Chebi 2: My Fluffy Friend

Closing the event on August 30 is the sequel to one of the highest-grossing films in Russian history. Directed by Dmitry Dyachenko, this live-action animated comedy continues the adventures of Cheburashka, the big-eared creature who has become something of a national icon, often described as Russia’s answer to Paddington Bear. In this installment, Cheburashka has settled into life with his friend Gena the crocodile but, like any growing child, begins testing his independence, leading to fresh mischief and adventure. A warm, family-oriented crowd-pleaser, it was a major box office hit at home.

The event forms part of a wider push to strengthen cultural ties between Russia and Pakistan. Earlier in the year, officials from both countries outlined plans to deepen artistic and people-to-people engagement, with film, music, and heritage identified as key areas for collaboration. Screenings such as these offer Pakistani audiences a rare opportunity to experience Russian cinema on the big screen, a segment of world film seldom shown in local theaters.

Cultural film events of this kind have become an increasingly common form of soft diplomacy, allowing nations to share their storytelling traditions with foreign audiences and foster mutual understanding beyond formal political and economic channels. For film enthusiasts in the capital, the Russian Cinema Days present a chance to explore a different cinematic tradition, one shaped by its own distinct history, aesthetics, and narrative sensibilities.

With free admission and a schedule spanning both children’s and adult titles, the event is expected to draw a varied crowd across the weekend. Those planning to attend are advised to collect their tickets from the Cineplex box office at Centaurus Mall, where seating will be available on the days of the screenings.
