Everything you need to know about Insomniac’s Wolverine game, from where to play it to how the X-Men ’97 suit works.
Insomniac Games’ Marvel’s Wolverine is finally here, and it lands as one of the most anticipated superhero games in years. After first being revealed in 2021, the title arrives from the same studio behind the hit Spider-Man series, bringing Wolverine’s brutal, close-quarters combat to PlayStation.
The game is a single-player action-adventure that follows the same broad formula Insomniac refined across its Spider-Man titles. Its story sends Wolverine to multiple locations, with earlier footage confirming stops that include Japan, Madripoor and Canada. It is also reported to be the first of three X-Men games in development at the studio, part of a wider publishing deal between Sony and Marvel, so this launch is being treated as the start of a much larger series.
This guide breaks down when it launches, where you can play it, and how its standout suit system, including the fan-favorite X-Men ’97 costume, actually works.

Marvel’s Wolverine release date and where to play
Marvel’s Wolverine releases on September 15, 2026. The game is a PlayStation 5 exclusive, so you will need a PS5 console to play it. It was first shown in full during Sony’s September 2025 State of Play broadcast, followed by a fall 2026 launch window that the studio later locked to its September date.
Being a PS5 exclusive, the game takes advantage of the console’s hardware for its fast, physical combat and detailed world. There is no confirmed PC or older-console version at launch, so the PlayStation 5 is currently the only place to play it.
How to play Marvel’s Wolverine and unlock the X-Men ’97 suit
One of the game’s biggest draws is its deep roster of unlockable, customizable costumes. Unlike a purely cosmetic system, suits in Marvel’s Wolverine serve a gameplay purpose: each new costume you unlock boosts Wolverine’s overall health, giving you a real incentive to hunt down every outfit as you progress.
The X-Men ’97 suit, a faithful recreation of Wolverine’s yellow-and-blue look from Marvel Animation’s series, is among the most anticipated of these. You can craft it after reaching the chapter titled “Way Down Low.” Equipping it also unlocks a matching set of animated-style claws, so the whole look comes together rather than just the outfit.
It is not the only recognizable design in the lineup. The game includes suits inspired by Deadpool & Wolverine, the Weapon X storyline, and classic comic looks, including Wolverine’s traditional brown-and-tan costume. Director Mike Daly has said the studio deliberately built the roster around the versions of the character fans would find most exciting and recognizable, creating a choose-your-own-suit experience that spans decades of Wolverine history.
What to know about the story before you play
Marvel’s Wolverine takes a different narrative route than most X-Men media. It is set in a world where mutants are feared and the X-Men have not yet formed as an established team. Insomniac has said this was a deliberate choice, explaining that starting with the X-Men already in place would have given mutants a built-in safe haven the studio wanted players to experience the world without. The result is a darker, more grounded setting where being a mutant is genuinely dangerous.
