Dubai International Airport is heading into one of its heaviest travel periods, with around three million passengers expected to pass through in the first half of July alone. As families head off for the summer break, the world’s busiest international airport leans on technology, extra staffing, and careful planning to keep passengers moving. Understanding how DXB manages the rush, and how to work with it, can make the difference between a stressful trip and a smooth one.
The scale is significant. Dubai’s airports handled 104.5 million passengers in 2025, up from 100.9 million the year before, and DXB ranks second in the world for international passenger traffic. It connects to 262 destinations across 104 countries through more than 100 airlines, which is why summer peaks put its systems under real pressure.
Dubai airport passenger clearance and smart gates
Dubai Customs has raised its operational readiness for the summer season through an integrated plan built with its partners at Dubai Airports. The focus is on keeping passengers moving without slowing security.
The technology does much of the work. Dubai Customs operates 19 advanced baggage-screening systems and 77 detection and inspection systems across the terminals. In the arrivals halls, the manual inspection area has cut baggage screening to just seven seconds per bag, reducing wait times while maintaining checks. According to Khalid Ahmed, Director of the Passenger Operations Department at Dubai Customs, the faster processing reflects the efficiency of modern equipment and does not come at the expense of security.
Immigration is handled by biometric smart gates, of which DXB has deployed 122 for 2026. Eligible travelers with a biometric passport can clear passport control in seconds by simply looking at the green light, with no document scan required. First-time users may need a quick one-time registration. Children under 1.2 meters and people of determination are directed to manual counters for assistance.
DXB summer travel tips
Knowing the layout saves time. DXB has three terminals: Terminal 3 is almost entirely Emirates and Qantas, Terminal 1 serves most other international carriers through Concourse D, and Terminal 2 handles flydubai and regional airlines. Terminals 1 and 3 sit next to each other and connect directly to the Dubai Metro Red Line, while Terminal 2 is reached by a free 24-hour shuttle that runs between all terminals.
A few steps make the peak season easier to navigate:
- Arrive about three hours before international flights during summer, since queues build during the busy evening and late-night waves.
- Check in online and use the self-service kiosks to print bag tags before reaching the counter.
- Confirm your terminal before leaving home, as airlines and gates can change, and download the DXB app for live updates.
- Take the Metro Red Line from Terminals 1 and 3 for the fastest route into the city, and carry a Nol card since buses do not accept cash. Note the Metro does not run overnight.
- For Terminal 2, allow extra time to reach it by shuttle or taxi.
New DXB summer travel services
Dubai Customs is adding services aimed at the wider range of travelers passing through in summer. One is a set of dedicated pet inspection rooms being developed in Terminals 1, 2, and 3, giving arriving and departing passengers a properly equipped space for veterinary checks to be completed quickly.
Customs guidance also helps travelers avoid surprises. Passengers may bring in gifts worth up to 3,000 dirhams without paying customs duties, provided the items are personal, limited in quantity, and not for commercial use. Anything above the permitted limits is subject to duty.
For long layovers, DXB offers sleep pods in Terminals 1 and 3, lounges with showers and hot food, prayer rooms, water filling stations, and children’s play areas in Terminal 3. Travelers with more than six hours and a valid visa can even take the Metro to Downtown Dubai to see the Burj Khalifa area before returning.
The airport’s summer readiness reflects Dubai’s wider push to stay a leading destination for tourism and business under the Dubai Economic Agenda D33. For passengers, the combination of faster screening, biometric gates, and clear planning means the peak-season rush is manageable.
A little preparation, arriving early, knowing the terminal and using the Metro, goes a long way toward turning three million fellow travelers into a smooth journey rather than a stressful one.
