The queen of country music, beloved songwriter, and tireless philanthropist died peacefully at her home in Nashville, her family announced.

Dolly Parton, the country music legend whose voice, songwriting, and boundless warmth made her one of the most beloved figures in American culture, has died at the age of 80. She passed away peacefully at her home in Nashville on Tuesday, according to a statement from her family.

The announcement was made by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, on behalf of the Parton family, who said a small, private service would be held for her closest relatives. No cause of death was given, though Parton had been open in recent years about a series of health issues, particularly following the death of her husband of nearly six decades, Carl Dean, in March 2025.

Parton’s story was, from the beginning, the stuff of American legend. Born in 1946 and raised in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee, she was one of twelve children in a family of very modest means. The hardships of that childhood would later inspire some of her most cherished songs, including “Coat of Many Colors,” a tender tribute to her mother and to finding richness in love rather than money.

The day after graduating high school in 1964, she left for Nashville, where she first made her name writing songs for other performers before stepping into the spotlight herself. Over a career spanning more than six decades, she released around 50 solo studio albums and was credited with composing more than 3,000 songs, moving fluidly between traditional country, pop, bluegrass, and gospel.

Dolly Parton’s Songs that Defined Generations

Few artists have written a catalogue so deeply woven into the fabric of popular music. “Jolene,” with its haunting plea, and “I Will Always Love You,” later transformed into a global phenomenon by Whitney Houston, stand among the most enduring songs ever written. “9 to 5,” her anthem for working women, became a cultural touchstone in its own right, complete with an Oscar-nominated turn in the accompanying film.

Her accolades reflected that extraordinary reach. She earned 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement honor, alongside Emmy recognition, Oscar nominations, and induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. She sold well over 100 million records worldwide and remained one of the most nominated women in Grammy history.

Yet for the millions who simply called her “Dolly,” her impact went far beyond the charts. She was widely admired as a philanthropist, most notably through her Imagination Library, which has gifted many millions of books to children around the world to encourage a lifelong love of reading. She was also regarded as a quiet pioneer, a woman who wrote her own songs, owned her work, and steered her own career in an industry long dominated by men, all while remaining unfailingly gracious and self-deprecating in her humor.

In their statement, her family remembered her as an inspiration whose “wit, warmth, and kindness made us all feel like family,” describing her legacy as one of love, compassion, and resilience.

Tributes have poured in from around the world in the hours since the announcement, a reflection of a woman who transcended genre and generation to become something rarer than a star: a unifying and universally cherished figure. Dolly Parton is survived by her siblings and a global family of fans who will, in the words of her most famous song, always love her.
