From daily walks to quiet companionship, pets shape the health of their owners in ways both big and small.

Ask most pet owners whether their cat or dog is good for them, and the answer tends to be an easy yes. A 2023 survey found that 86 percent of pet owners believed their animals had a positive effect on their mental health. Science has spent decades looking into whether that instinct holds up, and the picture that emerges is encouraging, if more nuanced than the headlines sometimes suggest.

Pets offer companionship, structure, and a reason to get moving, all of which touch on health in different ways. The strongest evidence sits on the physical side, particularly for dog owners, whose daily walks add up to real benefits over time. On the mental side, many studies point to lower stress and loneliness, though researchers are careful to note the findings are mixed and that a pet is not a cure for any condition.

What most experts agree on is that the bond between people and animals is powerful, and that caring for a pet changes daily life in measurable ways. The routine of feeding, walking, and looking after an animal builds a rhythm into the day, and the presence of a warm, familiar companion can ease difficult moments.

It is worth saying from the outset that adopting a pet is a serious commitment and not a simple fix for health concerns. Animals cost money, need time and care, and bring responsibilities of their own. For those able to take that on, though, the rewards can extend well beyond company. Here is what the research says about how pets support both body and mind.

How Pets Improve Physical Health and Fitness

The clearest health benefit of pet ownership shows up in physical activity, and dogs lead the way. Study after study has found that dog owners walk more than people without dogs, simply because a dog needs walking every day. That regular movement adds up, supporting mobility, fitness, and time spent outdoors.

Those walks appear to matter for heart health too. The American Heart Association reviewed the available evidence and concluded that pet ownership, and dog ownership in particular, likely plays a role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Much of that benefit was linked to the physical activity that comes with owning a dog. One meta-analysis also reported positive effects of dog ownership on overall and heart-related mortality.

Pets may influence the body in quieter ways as well. Research has linked the presence of a pet to lower blood pressure, with one study of people managing hypertension finding that their blood pressure response to stress was lower when a pet was nearby. Being around animals has also been associated with reduced stress hormones, which over time can ease some of the strain that stress places on the body.

How Pets Support Mental Health and Wellbeing

On the mental side, many people find their pets provide steady emotional support. Numerous studies report that pet owners experience lower levels of anxiety, depression, and loneliness, and that animals can offer comfort even to people living with serious mental health conditions. Two of the most difficult experiences that pets appear to ease are social isolation and loneliness, thanks to the constant companionship they provide.

Pets can also help build social connection beyond the home. Walking a dog, visiting a park, or simply chatting with fellow owners creates natural opportunities for interaction. The daily care an animal requires adds structure as well, giving owners a routine and a sense of purpose that can be grounding during hard times.

Researchers do add a note of caution here. The evidence on pets and mental health is mixed, with some large studies finding little measurable effect on symptoms of depression. What is consistent is that many owners report feeling better for having a pet, and that the companionship itself carries value that is hard to capture in data alone.

What to Consider Before Getting a Pet

Alongside the benefits, it helps to go in with clear eyes. Pets are a long-term responsibility that involves cost, time, and care. Some studies note practical downsides too, such as the expense of looking after an animal and, for older owners, a higher risk of falls.

Choosing a pet that suits your living space, budget, and activity level makes a real difference to how well the relationship works.

For those ready to take it on, the payoff often runs deep. Pets encourage movement, ease loneliness, add routine to the day, and offer a kind of steady, uncomplicated company that many people treasure.

The research does not promise that an animal will solve every health concern, and it should never be seen that way. What it does suggest is that, for the right person in the right circumstances, sharing a home with a pet can be genuinely good for both body and mind.
