The black gown Princess Diana wore on one of the most talked-about nights of her life is going up for sale nearly 30 years later.

One of the most famous dresses in modern history is going up for auction. Princess Diana’s black “revenge dress,” worn on a night that became fashion legend, will be sold in New York this December, almost 30 years after it last changed hands.

Sotheby’s will offer the gown on December 9, 2026, with an estimated value of $150,000 to $300,000. Given Diana’s lasting popularity, the final price could climb higher. Before the sale, the dress is going on a global tour, giving people in several cities a chance to see the original piece up close.

The gown will be on display at Sotheby’s in London through September 24. It then travels to Hong Kong from October 1 to 15, followed by Geneva from November 6 to 11, before arriving in New York for the December sale. Part of the proceeds will go to NHS Lothian Charity, on behalf of the Royal Edinburgh Hospital.

The Story Behind Princess Diana’s Revenge Dress

The dress gets its nickname from the night it first made headlines. Diana wore the off-the-shoulder black design to a Vanity Fair fundraising dinner at London’s Serpentine Gallery on June 29, 1994. What could have been just another evening event became a major moment because of its timing.

That same night, a television documentary aired in which Prince Charles admitted he had been unfaithful during their marriage. The couple had already separated in 1992. Instead of staying home while the program aired, Diana attended the event in a bold black gown, and the photographs from that night ran everywhere the next day.

A British newspaper printed the headline “Revenge is chic,” and the name stuck. The look outlasted the marriage and is still referenced by designers and stylists more than 30 years later.

The dress had actually spent years hanging unworn in Diana’s closet. She reportedly thought the design was too daring for royal engagements. The night of the documentary changed that, and a dress she had once set aside became one of the most remembered outfits she ever wore.

Princess Diana’s iconic ‘Revenge Dress’ is being auctioned for the first time in 30 years.

She previously sold it off in an auction to raise money for charities focusing on cancer and AIDS.

A Piece of Fashion History Returns to the Block

The gown was designed by Greek-born designer Christina Stambolian. It is an off-the-shoulder black silk evening dress with a chiffon train, worn that night with black heels and a matching clutch. Its simple, sharp shape is a big part of why the look is still so recognizable.

This is not the first time the dress has been sold. It appeared as Lot 2 at a Christie’s auction in New York on June 25, 1997, part of a charity sale in which Diana auctioned dozens of her dresses to raise money for cancer and AIDS causes. That wider sale raised more than $3.25 million. Diana died just weeks later, which gave the collection added significance.

The dress will be sold with a copy of that 1997 Christie’s catalog, signed by both Diana and Stambolian. The catalog credits Prince William with suggesting the original charity sale to his mother, a detail that adds to the gown’s history and helps confirm that it is genuine.

Interest in Diana’s wardrobe has kept growing over the years. Her dresses regularly sell for high prices at auction, some reaching hundreds of thousands of dollars and, in a few cases, more than a million. The value comes from the garment and from the person who wore it.

The sale gives collectors and royal fashion fans another chance to bid on one of Diana’s best-known outfits. It also brings attention back to the evening the dress is tied to, when Diana went ahead with a public appearance during a difficult chapter and wore something that people are still talking about today.
