The actor’s 17-year dream just opened its doors in Palmdale, California, built so foster siblings never have to be split apart.

Some passion projects burn out. This one took seventeen years and only got stronger. This week, actor Christian Bale stood at the ribbon-cutting of a foster care village he first imagined back in 2008, a place built on a single, tender idea: that brothers and sisters who lose their parents should not also lose each other. For thousands of children who enter foster care and get scattered into separate homes, that idea can change everything.

The village, called Together California, opened in Palmdale, a city about 60 miles north of Los Angeles. According to ABC7 Los Angeles, it is described as the first village of its kind in the state, designed to keep siblings under one roof while they are in care, something organizers say is rare for most children in the system.

“It’s our job to turn their heartbreak and their pain into love and hope and a sense of future,” Bale said at the opening.

The numbers behind it land as hard as the mission. The project is reported to have cost around $22 million, and families are set to begin moving in next month.

Christian Bale quietly dedicated roughly 17 years to developing a foster care village in Palmdale, California.

The $20–22 million project was intentionally designed to keep siblings together in the foster system, providing them with family-style homes.

Inside Christian Bale’s Together California foster village

The campus is built to feel like a neighborhood, not an institution. According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the roughly 11,000-square-foot community includes 12 furnished homes designed as safe, nurturing spaces for children and the trained foster parents who care for them. Each home is built to hold a sibling group, so a family of brothers and sisters can stay together instead of being sent to different placements across the county.

The site holds more than housing. Reporting from Snopes, drawing on the project’s architects, notes that the village also includes studio units for young adults aging out of the foster system, a large community building of around 7,000 square feet, and shared outdoor space. The idea is a full support system, a place where kids have stability, real programs, and room to simply be children.

Bale co-founded Together California with his wife Sibi and Dr. Eric Esrailian, a physician and UCLA professor. According to realtor.com, California carries the highest number of children in foster care in the country, topping 43,000 in 2023 figures, which is part of why the team planted the project there.

Why keeping foster siblings together changes everything

The heart of this story is not the money or the famous name attached to it. It is the quiet cruelty the project was built to fix. When children are removed from their homes, they are often placed wherever there is an open bed, and that frequently means siblings are split apart at the exact moment they need each other most. Losing a parent is a wound. Losing your brother or sister on the same day cuts a second one right beside it.

Bale has spoken about this in deeply personal terms. He told CBS that when he closes his eyes for the last time, he wants to know he did some good, and that this would be among the things he is proudest of when he draws his last breath.

Christian Bale officially opened a $22 million foster care village in Palmdale on Sept. 11, after 17 years in the making.

Seventeen years of planning and fundraising have turned into twelve homes in Palmdale. The first families are expected to move in next month, where siblings entering foster care can stay together under one roof.
