A Pakistan Air Force officer, Group Captain Asim Tariq, embraced martyrdom on Sunday after stepping in to protect a woman from an armed assailant on Islamabad’s Ninth Avenue. His act of courage cost him his life but saved the woman he moved to defend.
The incident took place near Shaheen Chowk, close to the Pakistan Air Force Headquarters and within the jurisdiction of Margalla Police Station. What began as an ordinary drive through the capital became a moment that would define an officer’s bravery.
Group Captain Tariq is survived by his widow, a daughter, and a son. Tributes have poured in across the country for a man remembered as a courageous officer who laid down his life for a stranger in need.
Group Captain Tariq was travelling along Ninth Avenue when he noticed a woman being pulled by a motorcyclist who was trying to force her to go with him against her will, according to Geo News. Seeing her in distress, he did not hesitate. He turned his vehicle around and stopped near the motorcycle to intervene.
The woman ran to the safety of his car as he stepped forward. As reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan, the suspect began arguing with the officer before drawing a pistol and opening fire. Group Captain Tariq sustained fatal injuries and embraced martyrdom at the scene, while the attacker fled.
His decision to turn back, made in an instant, gave the woman the chance to reach safety. That single choice reflected the instinct of a trained officer and the heart of a man willing to place another life above his own.
Islamabad police responded swiftly to the shooting. According to Arab News, officers reached the scene, secured the area, and took the woman into protective custody. She told investigators that the suspect was a workplace colleague who had offered her a ride but then changed the route and tried to take her elsewhere by force, leading to the struggle that Group Captain Tariq interrupted.
The Islamabad Inspector General of Police said 11 investigation teams were formed after the incident, and the suspect, identified as Saad, was arrested within nine hours. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi expressed his condolences to the family, sought a report from the police chief, and directed that no effort be spared in securing justice.
Group Captain Asim Tariq will be remembered as an officer who embodied the values of service and sacrifice.
