Spring Break 2026: UAE Schools and Universities Get Early Holiday

The UAE's Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research announced on Wednesday that spring break will run from Monday, March 9, to Sunday, March 22. The decision applies to all government and private schools and universities, covering students, teaching staff, and administrative personnel.

The announcement comes after a week of remote classes across the country's education sector. Schools and universities shifted to distance learning on March 2 as a precautionary measure amid regional security developments, marking one of the most significant disruptions to in-person schooling in the UAE since the pandemic.

The Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research subsequently extended the remote learning period until Friday, March 6, stating that developments would be closely monitored and that additional measures would be taken as required to safeguard the well-being of students and the educational community.

The distance learning directive covered all public and private schools and universities nationwide, applying equally to students, academic staff, and administrative personnel. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority of Dubai confirmed the same arrangements were in place across the emirate, describing the move as a precautionary measure with student safety as the highest priority.

How Schools Delivered Remote Classes

Schools and universities delivered classes through existing digital infrastructure, including Microsoft Teams, Google Classroom, Zoom, and centralized learning management systems. Live video sessions, recorded lessons, online assessments, and assignment submissions continued according to scheduled timetables. Institutions communicated directly with parents and students through school portals, mobile apps, email, and SMS to ensure continuity.

Dr. Saif Al Dhaheri, spokesperson for the National Crisis and Emergency Management Authority, confirmed that business continuity plans had been activated across vital sectors as a precautionary measure. He stated that the education process continued uninterrupted through the activation of remote learning systems nationwide.

The UAE's investment in digital education infrastructure in the years following the pandemic meant the transition to remote learning was implemented with minimal disruption. Schools were already equipped with the platforms, teacher training, and technical support required to operate fully online at short notice.

Regional Context Behind the Decisions

Both the shift to distance learning and the early spring break announcement were made against the backdrop of ongoing regional tensions following Iranian air strikes targeting the UAE. Since the start of hostilities, authorities have issued a series of precautionary measures across multiple sectors, including airspace management, pharmaceuticals, food security, and financial markets.

The Ministry of Economy and Tourism confirmed that the UAE's strategic reserves of essential commodities remain robust and that all essential goods continue to be available across retail outlets nationwide. The Emirates Drug Establishment similarly confirmed that pharmaceutical supply chains are operating normally and that medicine stockpiles are sufficient to meet the needs of citizens, residents, and visitors for extended periods.

Within the education sector, the sequence of decisions, first a three-day remote learning period, then an extension to March 6, and now an early spring break beginning March 9, means students will have been away from in-person classes for a continuous stretch starting March 2.

Spring Break Dates and Return to School

Spring break runs from Monday, March 9, through Sunday, March 22, covering all government and private schools and universities across the UAE. The decision applies uniformly regardless of emirate, institution type, or educational level.

In-person classes are expected to resume on Monday, March 23, subject to any further official announcements. The Ministry of Education has not yet issued guidance on whether the academic calendar will be adjusted to account for the distance learning days.

Parents and students are advised to follow their school's official communication channels for updates ahead of the new term. Both ministries confirmed that developments will continue to be closely monitored and that any additional measures will be communicated as required.
