A 56-year-old Bangladeshi expat has gone missing in Ajman since the night of February 17, 2026, the eve of Ramadan, and his family and employer are appealing to anyone with information to come forward.
MD Surooq Mia, who has lived and worked in the emirate for 15 years, left his accommodation in Ajman's industrial area that evening and has not returned since. He works as a car washer for a company run by Shehzaad, an Indian expat who has known and employed Surooq for years. His disappearance has left his family in Bangladesh in distress and his colleagues in Ajman conducting nightly searches with no answers.
According to his employer Shehzaad, Surooq had finished his shift, returned to his room, sent money home to his family in Bangladesh, taken a shower, and had dinner before heading out toward a nearby grocery store around 800 meters from his accommodation, close to Ajman's Lucky Roundabout.
CCTV footage captured him entering the store at 9:28 PM, wearing a lungi, a traditional South Asian garment similar to a long skirt, and a white shirt. That footage is the last confirmed visual record of him.
His youngest son, 16-year-old MD Shariful Islam, spoke to him by phone between 9:15 PM and 9:17 PM UAE time that same night, just minutes before he appeared on the CCTV footage. "My father told me he had to go to the market, so I hung up the phone," Shariful told Khaleej Times. That brief exchange was their last contact.
Surooq did not have his Emirates ID on him when he left. His employer has since provided his family in Bangladesh with a copy of the document in case it is needed for any official processes while he remains missing.
Family and Employer Appeal for Help
Surooq's family in Bangladesh includes his wife, two sons, a daughter, and a grandchild. His only relative in the UAE is a working son-in-law. Shehzaad said there is no known reason for Surooq to have left voluntarily.
"We trust him a lot. Before going missing, he had remitted money back home, which his family confirmed they received," Shehzaad told Khaleej Times. He described Surooq as frail, approximately 50 kg in weight and 4 feet 8 inches tall, and a passive smoker.
Since the disappearance, Shehzaad and his staff have been conducting daily searches after iftar, asking around the neighborhood for any leads. They have visited the Ajman Industrial Area Police Station, Hamidiya Police Station, and the Ajman Immigration Office, but have not found any trace of him. Authorities informed them that a missing person report can only be formally filed after seven days.
Anyone with information about MD Surooq Mia is urged to contact Ajman Police.
