Jonathan: The Tortoise That Has Lived Through Nearly Two Centuries

For nearly two centuries, one remarkable tortoise has quietly witnessed the changing world from the grounds of Plantation House on the remote island of Saint Helena. Jonathan, a Seychelles giant tortoise, is recognised as the world’s oldest living land animal and the oldest chelonian ever reliably recorded.

Born around 1832, Jonathan is estimated to be about 194 years old in 2026. His exact birth date is unknown, but historical photographs provide clues to his extraordinary age. When he arrived on Saint Helena in 1882, he was already fully grown, meaning he was likely at least 50 years old.

That places Jonathan’s lifetime across an extraordinary stretch of history. He was alive during the reign of Queen Victoria and has survived the arrival of the automobile, the airplane, radio, television, space exploration and the digital age. He has existed through two World Wars and witnessed generations of people come and go while remaining largely unchanged by the passage of time. Jonathan’s longevity is particularly remarkable because giant tortoises are already among the longest-lived animals on Earth. Their slow metabolism, relatively protected lifestyles and evolutionary adaptations allow some individuals to survive for well over a century. Yet even among these exceptionally long-lived creatures, Jonathan stands apart.

Age has inevitably caught up with him. Jonathan has developed cataracts and has lost much of his sense of smell, but he continues to receive care and remains a beloved symbol of Saint Helena. His keepers supplement his natural diet with fresh vegetables and monitor his health closely.

More than a record-holder, Jonathan has become a living link to the past. His life stretches back to a world vastly different from our own—a time before modern medicine, electric cars, commercial aviation or the internet. In an age defined by rapid technological change, Jonathan represents something almost timeless. He reminds us that history is not always found in museums or books. Sometimes, it can be found in a living creature quietly grazing in a garden, carrying almost two centuries of history on its shell.

At nearly two hundred years old, Jonathan is not simply the world’s oldest tortoise. He is arguably one of the most extraordinary living witnesses to human history.
