Apple may be preparing to make a more significant distinction between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Recent leaks suggest that the larger Pro Max could receive a variable-aperture main camera, while the smaller iPhone 18 Pro may retain a fixed aperture. If accurate, the change would give buyers another reason to choose the larger and more expensive model beyond its display and battery size. However, Apple has not confirmed the feature.
The latest claim comes from leaker Ice Universe, who said on Weibo that the variable-aperture camera will be exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The claim follows earlier reports that the technology could be introduced across both iPhone 18 Pro models.
There is some additional evidence behind the Pro Max claim. Leaked files reportedly linked to Apple supplier Tata Electronics have referenced a Sony IMX905 sensor with variable-aperture support for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The leaked material did not mention the smaller iPhone 18 Pro in connection with the same feature. That absence, however, does not establish that the Pro will definitely lack it.
A variable aperture would represent a change from Apple’s current iPhone camera design. The main cameras on the iPhone 14 Pro through iPhone 17 Pro generations use a fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture. A variable-aperture system can physically change the size of the lens opening, allowing the camera to control how much light reaches the sensor. It can also provide greater optical control over exposure and depth of field.
The technology itself is not new to smartphones, but it would be new to the iPhone. Apple has so far relied on fixed-aperture camera hardware combined with computational photography and other image-processing technologies. Introducing a variable aperture would therefore represent a hardware change to the way the main camera handles light.
The potential Pro Max exclusivity also has a precedent in Apple’s recent iPhone history. The iPhone 15 Pro Max introduced Apple’s tetraprism telephoto system, providing 5x optical zoom, while the iPhone 15 Pro had a 3x telephoto camera. Apple subsequently brought the tetraprism system to the smaller Pro model with the iPhone 16 Pro.
That history shows that Apple has previously used camera hardware to distinguish the Pro Max from the smaller Pro before eventually expanding a feature to both models. If the latest iPhone 18 reports are accurate, the company could once again use the larger model as the first home for a new camera technology.
The physical size of the Pro Max could also be relevant. Reports indicate that the iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to be larger and heavier than its predecessor. A larger chassis could provide additional internal space for a variable-aperture mechanism, although Apple has not confirmed that this is the reason for any potential exclusivity.
The reports are not completely consistent, however. Earlier reporting from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo indicated that both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would receive variable-aperture main cameras. Other reports have similarly suggested the feature could appear on both Pro models. The newer Pro Max-exclusive claim therefore remains unconfirmed.
If Apple does restrict variable aperture to the Pro Max, the distinction between the two models would become more meaningful. Consumers who prefer a smaller phone could still choose the Pro, while users who prioritize maximum camera hardware would have a specific reason to select the Pro Max.
For now, though, the variable-aperture Pro Max remains a reported feature rather than an official specification. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September 2026. Until the company officially announces the devices, the exact camera differences between the two models remain unconfirmed.
