Sleep loss is often treated as a next-day problem, tied to grogginess and low focus. Research published in July 2026 points to a longer-term effect. Even a modest reduction in nightly sleep is associated with weight gain, increased inactivity, and shifts in the hormones that control hunger and fullness. It does not take extreme deprivation. Just over an hour less each night is enough to start the process.
The study appeared on July 7 in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Researchers at Columbia University recruited 95 adults who typically slept seven to eight hours a night. Each participant completed two six-week phases. In one phase, they delayed their bedtime by 90 minutes, cutting actual sleep by about 78 minutes a night. In the other, they kept their normal schedule. Participants wore wrist monitors that tracked sleep and movement, and researchers measured body weight, waist circumference, body composition, and fasting hormone levels.
Mild sleep loss linked to weight gain and inactivity
During the sleep-restriction phase, participants gained about one pound on average and their waist circumference increased. First author Faris Zuraikat noted the gain was modest but occurred over just six weeks, and that repeating the pattern over months or years would compound the effect.
The change was not only about eating more. Participants also moved less during the short-sleep phase:
– Sedentary time rose by an average of 17 minutes a day.
– Among men and postmenopausal women, inactivity increased by nearly 30 minutes daily.
– Levels of leptin, a hormone involved in regulating energy balance, also shifted.
Study leader Marie-Pierre St-Onge said the design aimed to reflect real-world sleep patterns rather than the extreme deprivation used in earlier lab studies. She noted that roughly 30 percent of adults experience this level of mild, chronic sleep loss, and that separate research on the same group found people with elevated heart risk showed an influx of inflammatory cells in the heart after mild sleep restriction.
How short sleep affects metabolism and health
The body’s response to lost sleep reaches beyond the waistline. A review from Stanford Lifestyle Medicine reports that consistently sleeping less than seven hours can:
– Disrupt the appetite hormones ghrelin and leptin, throwing off signals of hunger and fullness.
– Increase cravings, often for high-fat and high-carbohydrate foods.
– Raise the risk of obesity in adults by around 38 percent.
Ghrelin drives appetite while leptin signals fullness, so when the balance tips, the body pushes toward more food. Sleep also affects how the body stores what it takes in. Research from Penn State found that after nights of restricted sleep, the body clears fat from meals faster and stores it more quickly, shifting its fuel preference toward sugar. The researchers linked this to reduced insulin sensitivity, meaning the body becomes less efficient at moving glucose from the blood into muscle. Over time, that pattern is tied to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
The distinction between what a person weighs and what that weight is made of also matters. Poor sleep raises cortisol, a stress hormone that prompts the body to store fat and burn muscle for energy. That means dieters who cut sleep can lose more muscle and less fat than those who rest well, even on the same calorie intake.
Simple steps to protect nightly sleep
The Columbia authors noted limits to their work. The six-week window may have been too short to detect changes in body composition, and the study was not designed to formally test differences between subgroups. Still, the direction of the evidence is consistent, and the practical response is straightforward. According to guidance from the Mayo Clinic, most adults can protect their sleep with a few habits:
– Keep a consistent bedtime and wake time, including weekends, to reinforce the body’s internal clock.
– Aim for seven to eight hours, and no more than eight hours in bed for most people.
– Keep the bedroom cool, dark, and quiet.
– Avoid heavy meals, caffeine, and alcohol close to bedtime, since their effects can linger for hours.
– Limit screen use before bed, as evening light can make falling asleep harder.
– If sleep does not come within about 20 minutes, leave the bedroom and do something calming, then return when tired.
St-Onge said the findings support a role for adequate sleep in weight management, alongside diet and physical activity, and that the next step is to study the health effects of improving sleep in people who regularly fall short. For most adults, the takeaway is simple. Protecting seven to eight hours a night is a low-cost habit with a measurable payoff for weight and long-term health.
