Oh my sweet summer child, what are your thoughts about Helaena’s dreams, Sunfyre’s resurrection and Rhaenyra’s fate?
Okay, so. We need to talk about Sunday night, because House of the Dragon just did the thing it does best, which is reach into your chest, rearrange everything in there, and then leave you sobbing on the internet at 2am with a hundred thousand strangers doing exactly the same. The Season 3 finale aired, and within minutes X was an absolute warzone of feelings. Nobody was normal about it. Nobody was ever going to be normal about it.

Where do we even begin? This was a finale that seemed determined to hit every single nerve at once. Some of us are calling it spectacular, some are calling it frustrating, and a whole lot of us are stuck somewhere in the wreckage of both, wrung out, blown away, a little bit furious, and already gasping for more. That is the House of the Dragon experience in a nutshell. We knew what we signed up for, and it still managed to leave us in pieces. So let us get into it, because there is a lot to unpack and even more to grieve.
The Battle of Tumbleton Lights Up Social Media
Right, the battle. After a Season 2 finale that had half the fandom threatening to riot because it dared to end on a conversation instead of carnage, the show came back this time swinging. The First Battle of Tumbleton is the payoff we were promised, and it did not hold back. Rhaenyra scrambling to keep the Iron Throne, the whole board tipping into chaos at once, and the internet losing its collective mind over all of it.
It threw everyone into the blender together, Daemon and the Winter Wolves, that whole brutal collision with Ormund, Daeron, Gwayne and the Starks. And then Ulf, that snake, went and betrayed everyone and turned a bloodbath into an actual nightmare. Peak House of the Dragon, in other words. The kind of sequence we watch through our fingers while typing furiously with the other hand.
And in true HOTD fashion, the show flat out refused to give anyone a clean win. It left the whole thing hanging, no clear victor, everything shoved onto Season 4 to untangle. Some of us loved the sheer audacity of it. Some of us wanted to throw the remote. Both reactions are valid. Both were all over our feeds.
For Helaena: The Heart This Show Never Deserved
Let us just say it plainly. It does not matter if you are Team Green or Team Black. You cannot, under any circumstances, hate Helaena. It is simply not possible, and for once the entire internet agrees.
In a show absolutely stuffed with schemers and warmongers and people who would happily torch a city to win a petty argument, Helaena was something none of the others were. She was soft. She was kind in a place that treats kindness like a weakness to be exploited. A dreamer who saw everything coming and could never quite make anyone listen, a mother whose grief was quietly some of the most devastating stuff this series has ever put on screen. She did not want the throne. She did not want the war. She wanted her babies and her stitching and to be left alone, and Westeros could not even give her that much.
Which is exactly why her ending gutted us. After a whole season basically caged inside the Red Keep, her story reached its heartbreaking close, and that final image, Rhaenyra getting there too late, too late for anything, absolutely wrecked people. And the grief online was not the dramatic, gif-heavy mourning we do for a fun shocking death. It was gentler than that. Sadder. The feeling of losing the one soul who never belonged in this vicious story in the first place.
So consider this her tribute, because she earned it. In a show where almost everyone has blood up to their elbows, Helaena stayed the single person it felt impossible to root against. Rest easy, dreamer. You deserved a softer story than the one they wrote for you, and we will not be forgetting you any time soon.
The Sun Has Risen Again: Aegon and Sunfyre Are Back
And then, when we least expected it, the sun rose again. Literally.
Can we please talk about how genuinely bizarre it is that we have all developed such a soft spot for Aegon? Aegon. This man started the series as possibly the least likeable person in it, and yet here we are, somewhere along the road of watching him get broken down to nothing and drag himself back up, absolutely feral with joy that he and Sunfyre survived. The two of them limping back into the story, scarred and half-destroyed and somehow still going, was one of the biggest talking points of the whole night.
And his scene with Aemond? Comedy gold. We cackled. Safe to say the Targaryen in him has finally learned to breathe fire, because there is a new edge to this man now, something harder and sharper that the old Aegon never had. The boy who never wanted the crown has been forged into something you genuinely do not want to cross, and watching the fandom pivot from mocking him to cheering him on has been one of the funniest, most unexpected arcs of the season.
But, and our hearts hurt already, wait until he finds out about Helaena. Because he does not know yet. He survived, the sun came back up for him, and waiting on the other side of that little triumph is a loss he has no idea he has already suffered. It is such a cruel piece of timing, the sun rising for Aegon at the exact moment his whole world quietly caved in beneath him, and every single one of us is already dreading the episode where those two things smash into each other.
The Two-Year Wait for Season 4 Is Genuinely Cruel
If there was one thing that united the entire fandom, warring houses and all, it was pure despair at the wait. Season 4 has been confirmed as the show’s last, and it is not landing until 2028. Two years. Two entire years to find out how the Dance of the Dragons ends.
For a finale this determined to leave us dangling, from Rhaenyra’s fate to that gut-punch reckoning still coming for Aegon, that gap is borderline sadistic. Our timelines were wall to wall with that specific thousand-yard stare of people realising they would have to sit with these cliffhangers until 2028, which, if you will remember, is exactly how we all felt last time too.
But that is the thing about this show. It gave every single one of us a different answer, a different thing to argue about, a different character to mourn, and a conversation that is very much still going strong days later. Hate it, love it, scream about it, it does not matter. Not one of us could look away, and not one of us will.
And the cruelest part of all? We already kind of know exactly how Rhaenyra’s story ends, which means the next two years will not be spent wondering what happens so much as bracing for it.
