Ariana Grande Explains Why She’s Stepping Back From the Spotlight

Ariana Grande has spoken publicly about her decision to step back from the spotlight after her Eternal Sunshine Tour, making it clear that the choice was made long before recent online speculation about her appearance and health. The singer addressed fans during a concert in Chicago on August 3, where she paused the show to explain why she plans to take a break from public visibility once the tour ends in September. Speaking for around four minutes, Grande said she wanted to clear up misconceptions that her decision was a response to criticism circulating on social media.

“I just wanted to tell you from my heart that this decision was not reactive or impulsive,” she told the audience, adding that it had been quietly planned well in advance. She said she felt it was important for fans to hear the explanation directly from her rather than relying on speculation.

Grande’s comments come after weeks of public discussion following the release of the music video for her latest single, Petal. The video prompted widespread conversations online about her appearance, with many fans expressing concern and others debating her health. While acknowledging that she understood why people were worried, Grande emphasized that those conversations had nothing to do with her plans. Instead, she explained that taking a step back was a personal decision she had already made. She did not want fans to believe that online negativity had forced her away from music or public life.

According to her representative, Grande intends to reduce her public-facing commitments after completing the tour to focus on her well-being. The spokesperson also pointed to the constant public scrutiny that comes with being one of the world’s biggest pop stars as a factor behind her decision. During her speech, Grande reassured fans that the decision was not connected to her feelings about performing. In fact, she described the Eternal Sunshine Tour as one of the most meaningful experiences of her career. She said being on stage and connecting with fans has been deeply healing, making it clear that her break is not a sign of dissatisfaction with her work.

The singer also spoke about the importance of setting personal boundaries. She explained that it is possible to love what you do while still recognizing the need to step away for a while. Her message suggested that taking time for herself should not be viewed as giving up, but rather as making a thoughtful decision to maintain balance.

As part of her planned hiatus, Grande has also withdrawn from the upcoming London production of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George, where she had been expected to perform alongside actor Jonathan Bailey. The move is consistent with her intention to reduce public commitments after the tour concludes.

Despite stepping back, Grande is not retiring. She will complete the remaining dates of her Eternal Sunshine Tour, and previously completed projects, including the comedy film Focker-in-Law, are still expected to be released as planned later this year.

By addressing the issue herself, Grande has shifted the conversation away from speculation and back to the facts. Her message was straightforward: the decision to step back was made long ago, it was carefully considered, and it reflects a personal choice to prioritize her well-being rather than a reaction to recent public criticism.
