Netflix has released the first look at The Magician’s Nephew, with Meryl Streep voicing Aslan and Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew.
Long before the wardrobe, the lamppost and the Pevensie children, there was a boy named Digory and a pair of magic rings. That is where Greta Gerwig has chosen to begin her version of Narnia, and fans finally have their first look at it.
Netflix has released the first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Gerwig’s adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s origin story. The trailer is set to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” and offers glimpses of a world being born, along with the first images of its two young leads.
Alongside the trailer, Netflix unveiled a poster showing a starry silhouette of Aslan, with Digory and Polly riding a winged horse beneath the tagline “A Universe Begins,” What’s on Netflix reported.
Narnia The Magician’s Nephew Cast and Story
Newcomers David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell lead the film as Digory Kirke and Polly Plummer, two children in London whose curiosity sends them out of their own world and into others.
Daniel Craig plays Digory’s Uncle Andrew, the amateur magician whose experiments with magic rings set the story in motion. Emma Mackey takes on the role of Jadis, the queen who would later become known to readers as the White Witch.
Meryl Streep voices Aslan, the great lion at the heart of the series. Gerwig has said she wanted someone for the role who was “profound but not pretentious.” The cast also includes Carey Mulligan, Ciarán Hinds, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Denise Gough and Susan Wokoma.
Published in 1955, The Magician’s Nephew was the sixth Narnia book Lewis released, but it comes first in the story’s timeline. It tells how Narnia was created and explains the origins of some of the series’ best-known elements, including the White Witch, the lamppost and the wardrobe itself. Readers will also recognize Digory as the professor whose house the Pevensie children visit in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Release Date
Gerwig wrote and directed the film, her first project since Barbie became the highest-grossing film of 2023. Her Barbie collaborators Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt are composing the original score.
Gerwig has said she loved the book as a child and has described bringing the story to the screen as an honor.
The film opens in IMAX and regular theaters worldwide on February 12, 2027, with IMAX sneak previews starting February 10. It will then arrive on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
The theatrical release marks a shift for Netflix, which usually debuts its films on its own platform. The studio originally planned a two-week IMAX run over Thanksgiving this year before moving the film to a full theatrical release in 2027. Sony Pictures will handle the theatrical release outside North America.
The film is the first Narnia adaptation since The Voyage of the Dawn Treader in 2010, and the first time The Magician’s Nephew has been brought to the screen.
