Met Gala 2026's "Fashion Is Art" Theme Gets a Hilarious Response From KFC

Fashion is art, the ocean is water, and it's safe to say that social media has never been funnier.

Every year, the Met Gala drops its theme and the internet has opinions. This year was no different. On February 23, Vogue officially revealed the dress code for the 2026 Met Gala: "Fashion Is Art." The announcement was elegant, the graphic was marble-textured, the font was serif, and the message was clear. Fashion, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art would like you to know, is art. Not just clothing, not just couture, but art. The kind that belongs in museums, next to paintings and sculptures and 5,000 years of human history. Very serious. Very grand. And then KFC opened X.

When the 2026 Met Gala officially announced its dress code as "Fashion Is Art," KFC responded on X with three words: "KFC Is Chicken." Not a campaign, not a brand moment, just a statement of fact that the internet completely lost its mind over.

Here's what KFC wrote on X:

And as we all are aware, social media users spare no one. In an era where random trends come out of nowhere, people were having fun takes of their very own. Users riffed on the format, some sarcastically pointing out that fashion being art is roughly as groundbreaking as saying the sky is blue. Others went full creative, posting concept outfits made from fast food packaging and cereal boxes.

The replies were hilarious!

The famous internet character Apu was also mentioned.

People came up with their own versions. Truth be told, we cannot disagree!

Some people had a philosophical take on this that got us thinking. Is KFC art after all?

Fair point!

Some brands across X started naming their products with the same flat confidence KFC had, and the replies kept coming.

I mean, is it even marketing if it is not riding the latest trend?

Safe to say, KFC was having a field day keeping users entertained. This is not the first time the brand has broken the internet with a completely effortless move. KFC has built a reputation for showing up at the right moment and saying the least amount of words possible for the biggest possible reaction. No budget required, no creative brief needed, just three words and a quote tweet.

2026 Met Gala Theme: Everything You Need to Know

The announcement came on February 23, when Vogue officially revealed the dress code for the 2026 Met Gala: "Fashion Is Art." The theme ties into this year's Costume Institute spring exhibition, also called Costume Art, which opens to the public on May 10, just days after the gala on May 4.

The exhibition is the largest the Costume Institute has ever mounted, featuring close to 400 objects including historical and contemporary garments alongside paintings, sculptures, and artifacts spanning 5,000 years of art history. It also inaugurates the Institute's brand new permanent home inside the Met, the nearly 12,000-square-foot Conde Nast Galleries adjacent to the Great Hall.

Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, explained the thinking behind it.

"What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body," he told Vogue. "It's the common thread throughout the whole museum."

The dress code invites attendees to treat fashion not as clothing but as a living artistic statement, with sculptural silhouettes, painterly textures, and looks referencing specific art movements all expected on the red carpet.

Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams to Co-Chair the 2026 Met Gala

The co-chair lineup is generating just as much conversation as the theme. Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour will serve as co-chairs, with Saint Laurent confirmed as the main fashion sponsor and Anthony Vaccarello and Zoe Kravitz leading the Host Committee. Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Sam Smith, and Teyana Taylor are also confirmed to attend. Tickets are reported to cost around $75,000 per seat, with Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez serving as honorary chairs and lead sponsors.

The biggest story is Beyonce's return. May 4 marks her first Met Gala appearance in a decade. She last walked the steps in 2016 for the "Manus x Machina" theme in a latex Givenchy gown that is still talked about today. Nicole Kidman has been a Met regular since 2003 and made headlines last year in a custom reimagining of a 1952 Balenciaga ballgown. Venus Williams brings the athletic-meets-high-fashion energy the theme practically calls for.

Why KFC Won the Internet That Day

The Met Gala comes with a $75,000 ticket price, marble-textured graphics, and philosophical statements about the centrality of the dressed body. KFC came with three words. The response drew thousands of replies, other brands followed, but KFC had already won the moment. Whether it was planned or spontaneous, the internet did not care. Three words, and the job was done.

The 2026 Met Gala takes place on May 4. KFC has not confirmed whether it will be attending.
