Dolly Parton Laid to Rest Beside Husband in Private Nashville Funeral

Country music icon Dolly Parton has been laid to rest beside her late husband, Carl Dean, following a private funeral in Nashville, Tennessee. Parton died on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer. Her family confirmed that the funeral was held privately in accordance with her wishes.

Parton was buried on Friday, August 28, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Nashville. The service was attended by immediate family members, keeping the farewell consistent with Parton’s request for a private ceremony rather than a large public funeral. Her great-niece, Lainey Parton, shared a tribute following the burial.

The singer was laid to rest next to Carl Dean, her husband of nearly 60 years. Dean died in March 2025 at the age of 82. Unlike Parton, who spent decades in the public eye as one of country music’s most recognizable performers, Dean largely avoided publicity and maintained a private life away from his wife’s career.

Parton and Dean married in 1966 after meeting in Nashville. Their marriage lasted almost six decades, and the couple remained together until Dean’s death. Parton frequently spoke about their relationship and the importance of maintaining a private life despite her international fame.

Their final resting place at Woodlawn Memorial Park also connects Parton with several other prominent figures from Nashville’s music history. The cemetery is the resting place of country music performers including Tammy Wynette, Porter Wagoner, George Jones and Marty Robbins.

Before her death, Parton had also discussed some of her wishes for her funeral. She had expressed a preference for a private farewell and had selected music she wanted associated with the occasion. Among the songs connected with her funeral plans was the gospel hymn “If We Never Meet Again,” which had particular significance because it was her father’s favorite hymn.

Parton’s death marked the end of a career that spanned more than six decades. She became one of the most successful figures in country music, earning 11 Grammy Awards and numerous other honors while also building a career as a songwriter, actress, author and philanthropist. Her best-known songs include “Jolene,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.” Beyond music, Parton became widely known for her philanthropic work. One of her most prominent initiatives is Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, which provides free books to children from birth to age five. Following her death, her family encouraged people wishing to honor her memory to make donations to the program rather than sending flowers.

Parton’s death has also prompted discussions about how Nashville and Tennessee will honor her legacy. Tennessee Governor Bill Lee has expressed support for renaming Nashville International Airport after the singer, while the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority is expected to discuss the proposal at a September meeting.

For now, Parton’s final resting place is alongside Dean, bringing her nearly 60-year marriage to a private close. The decision to hold a small family funeral reflects the private farewell she had requested, while tributes from family, fans and the music community continue to recognize her influence on country music and her contributions beyond the stage.
