How Some Animals Know When an Earthquake Is Coming

For centuries, people have reported unusual animal behavior before earthquakes. Dogs may become restless, birds may suddenly leave an area, and snakes or other animals may appear to behave differently. These observations have led to the idea that animals can somehow sense an earthquake before humans do. Scientific research, however, shows that the reality is more complicated: animals can detect some signals associated with earthquakes, but there is no reliable evidence that they can consistently predict when an earthquake will occur.

One of the clearest explanations involves the different seismic waves produced by an earthquake. When an earthquake begins, it generates several types of waves. The faster-moving primary, or P, waves can arrive before the slower and generally more damaging secondary, or S, waves. Humans often do not notice the weaker P wave, but animals with more sensitive hearing or greater sensitivity to vibrations may detect it. This can give them a few seconds of warning before stronger shaking reaches the surface.

Animals also possess sensory abilities that humans do not have to the same degree. Some species can detect very low-frequency sounds, vibrations and other environmental signals. These abilities may explain why animals sometimes appear to react before people realize an earthquake has started. However, sensing the initial seismic waves is different from predicting an earthquake hours or days in advance.

There have also been reports of animals behaving unusually several hours or even days before earthquakes. Historical accounts describe animals leaving their usual habitats, becoming agitated or changing their feeding and movement patterns. The U.S. Geological Survey notes that reports involving mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and insects have occurred over many years. The earliest known written account of unusual animal behavior before an earthquake dates to 373 BC in Greece, when rats, weasels, snakes and centipedes were reportedly said to have left their homes before a destructive earthquake.

Scientists have investigated whether these behaviors could be caused by physical changes that occur before some earthquakes. Proposed possibilities include changes in groundwater, electrical or magnetic conditions, ground movement and other environmental signals. Some researchers have suggested that certain animals could be sensitive to these changes because of their specialized sensory systems. However, these explanations remain areas of research rather than established methods of earthquake prediction.

Research has produced mixed results. A U.S. Geological Survey study published in 1981 found reports of unusual animal behavior several hours to several days before some earthquakes, but not most. The researchers also found that most individual animals behaved normally before earthquakes, making unusual behavior an unreliable signal.

The famous 1975 Haicheng earthquake in China is often cited in discussions about animals and earthquake prediction. Authorities evacuated part of the city before the magnitude 7.3 earthquake, and unusual animal behavior was among the observations considered at the time. Later analysis, however, found it difficult to determine precisely how the warnings were produced and how much the animal observations contributed to the evacuation.

Today, scientists do not consider animal behavior a dependable earthquake-warning system. The USGS states that there is no reproducible connection between a particular animal behavior and the occurrence of an earthquake. Animals can also behave strangely for many unrelated reasons, making it difficult to distinguish genuine seismic signals from normal behavioral changes.

The evidence therefore suggests an important distinction. Some animals may be able to detect an earthquake seconds before humans because they can sense the initial P waves. Whether animals can reliably detect an earthquake days or weeks before it happens remains unproven. Researchers continue to study animal behavior and the physical environment around earthquakes, but modern science cannot yet use animals to accurately predict an earthquake’s exact time, location or magnitude.
