A late night can leave you tired the next morning, but the effects of too little sleep may not stop at low energy and difficulty concentrating. Research shows that sleep can influence appetite, food intake and the way the body regulates energy. When sleep becomes consistently shorter, people may find themselves eating more, snacking more often or craving certain types of food.
One reason is that sleep and appetite are closely connected. The body uses several hormones and brain signals to regulate hunger and fullness. Ghrelin is a hormone associated with hunger, while leptin is involved in signaling that the body has had enough food. Some studies have found that sleep restriction can affect these hormones, although the findings are not completely consistent across research. A 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis involving 2,250 participants found an association between short sleep and higher ghrelin levels.
Controlled experiments have also found changes in how much people eat after losing sleep. A systematic review of 50 randomized controlled trials found that sleep restriction was generally associated with increases in energy intake, fat intake, hunger, eating occasions and portion size. The review included studies involving both adults and children.
Another review of 41 randomized controlled trials found that participants consumed, on average, about 253 additional calories per day during periods of sleep restriction compared with normal sleep. The same review found an increase in reported hunger and a reduction in insulin sensitivity.
Food choices can change too. In one small randomized crossover study, participants were limited to five hours of sleep for three nights and compared with periods when they were allowed eight hours. During sleep restriction, participants reported greater hunger and a stronger desire for fatty foods. They also consumed more energy and carbohydrates from snacks, including snacks eaten at night.
There is also a simple behavioral explanation: staying awake for longer creates more opportunities to eat. Someone who goes to bed at 2 a.m. instead of 10 p.m. has several additional waking hours during which they may snack. Late-night eating can therefore become part of a cycle in which insufficient sleep changes the timing and amount of food consumed.
Sleep may also affect how the brain responds to food. Research has found that sleep restriction can change activity in brain regions involved in food-related reward and cognitive control. This may influence how appealing food seems and how difficult it is to resist certain foods when tired.
The relationship between sleep and eating is not solely about appetite hormones, however. Recent research emphasizes that appetite, motivation to eat and actual food intake do not always change in the same way. A 2026 review of randomized controlled trials found that the effects of sleep restriction on appetite and motivation to eat were inconsistent, even though higher energy intake was frequently observed. This means there is still more to understand about exactly why insufficient sleep changes eating behavior.
Sleep also matters for metabolism. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that sleep deficiency can affect the body’s response to insulin and is associated with changes in hormones involved in hunger and fullness. The body’s internal circadian clocks also influence how tissues such as the liver, muscles and fat handle nutrients at different times of day.
None of this means that one bad night’s sleep will automatically lead to overeating. People’s responses to sleep loss vary, and research findings differ depending on the study. The stronger concern is repeated or chronic sleep restriction, which has been associated with changes in food intake and metabolic regulation.
Ultimately, sleep and eating are more closely connected than they may seem. Getting enough sleep does not guarantee healthy eating, but research shows that consistently sleeping too little can influence hunger, food intake, snacking and the body’s handling of energy. A healthy eating pattern, therefore, is not just about what is on the plate. Sleep is another important part of the picture.
