Pakistan has once again made its mark on the international academic stage, securing one gold and two silver medals at the 3rd International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO-2026) held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The competition, held from August 2 to 8, brought together around 120 students and experts from 19 countries, providing a platform for young scientists to demonstrate their knowledge and problem-solving abilities in nuclear science. Participants came from countries including China, Japan, Russia, Türkiye, Malaysia, Indonesia and the host country, Saudi Arabia.
The Pakistani team’s three-medal haul is a notable achievement in a highly specialised field. Muhammad Ali of Government College University (GCU), Lahore, claimed the gold medal, while Muhammad Usman of F.G. Sir Syed College, Rawalpindi, and Seerat Fatima Bhatti of Nixor College, Karachi, secured silver medals for Pakistan. Syed Shuja Haider of Sundar STEM School, Lahore, also represented the country at the competition. Winning gold against strong international competition reflects not only the individual abilities of the students but also the growing interest and talent in Pakistan’s scientific community.
Nuclear science encompasses a wide range of disciplines, from nuclear physics and radiation science to applications in medicine, energy, agriculture and industry. Competitions such as INSO give students an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to complex scientific challenges while engaging with peers from around the world. The event was supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), underscoring the global importance of developing the next generation of nuclear scientists and specialists.
For Pakistan, the achievement carries significance beyond three medals. At a time when scientific advancement and technological expertise are increasingly central to national development, international recognition of Pakistani students provides an encouraging reminder of the country’s academic potential.
The performance in Jeddah also highlights the value of investing in science education and creating opportunities for talented young Pakistanis to compete internationally. That investment looks set to continue: Pakistan has been selected to host the fourth International Nuclear Science Olympiad in 2027, giving the country a chance to showcase its growing role in the field on home soil.
One gold and two silver medals may be the immediate result, but the larger achievement is the visibility it gives to Pakistan’s emerging scientific talent — demonstrating that its young researchers can compete, and succeed, on some of the world’s most demanding academic platforms.
