Algebra, coffee and sugar are all Arabic words hiding in plain sight in everyday English.
Order a coffee with sugar and you’ve just spoken two words of Arabic without realizing it. Struggle through algebra homework and there’s a third. This isn’t a coincidence. Hundreds of English words, including cotton, alcohol, and algorithm, trace straight back to Arabic. Most of them arrived during a stretch of history when the Islamic world was quietly reshaping math, medicine, and global trade, and English absorbed the vocabulary along with the ideas.
These words didn’t all arrive the same way. Some rode in with merchants moving goods across the Mediterranean, changing shape slightly in Spanish, Italian, and Turkish before landing in English, according to Merriam-Webster. Others arrived in one big wave, when 12th-century European scholars sat down to translate entire libraries of Arabic scientific writing into Latin and pulled whole vocabularies along with the ideas they described.
This piece looks closely at three words that each carried a different kind of history behind them: algebra, from a mathematician’s textbook, coffee, from a prayer ritual, and sugar, from an empire’s sweet tooth. Each section below covers where the word came from, who was involved, and how it eventually landed in English.
How Algebra Got Its Name From a Broken Bone
Algebra sounds clinical today, but the Arabic word behind it originally described something closer to setting a broken bone back into place. It comes from the title of a math textbook written by a scholar named Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi, who worked at the House of Wisdom, a research institute in Baghdad that the caliph al-Ma’mun expanded into one of the great intellectual centers of its time, according to Britannica. Al-Khwarizmi wrote the book under the full title “Al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr wal-muqabala,” which translates roughly to “The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing,” sometime between 813 and 833 CE.
What made the book important wasn’t just that it discussed math. It was the first known text to treat algebra as its own separate subject, rather than folding it into geometry or arithmetic, according to Saqi Books. It also wasn’t purely abstract. A large part of the book worked through practical problems, including how to fairly divide up inheritances, which was a major legal issue under Islamic law at the time. When European scholars translated the book into Latin in the 12th century, the word “al-jabr” barely changed and became “algebra” across the continent.
Al-Khwarizmi left behind more than just one word. His own name, passed through Latin translations, eventually became “algorithm.” That means two of the most commonly used words in modern math and computer science both trace back to the same person, working in the same library, in the same city.
The Prayer Drink That Took Over the World
Coffee’s story starts with people trying to stay awake, not with coffee shop culture. The plant grew wild in Ethiopia, but the drink as people know it today, brewed and shared socially, first took shape in Yemen in the 15th century. Sufi religious communities there began drinking it to stay alert through long nights of prayer, according to Wikipedia’s history of coffee. They called it “qahwa,” and it was served in shared pots, ladled out row by row during worship gatherings.
The drink didn’t stay confined to religious settings for long. Farmers started growing it in small hillside gardens, drying the beans on rooftops, and the Yemeni port city of Mocha grew into a major hub for exporting coffee across the Middle East, according to Kiss the Hippo. As the drink traveled, so did its name. “Qahwa” became “kahve” in Turkish, then “caffè” in Italian, before finally settling into English as “coffee” by roughly 1650, according to Study International. The English word “cafe” comes from the same Arabic root, by way of “maqha.”
An Empire’s Sweet Tooth, Written Into a Word
Sugar’s journey to English took the longest and covered the most ground of the three. The sugarcane plant was first domesticated in Papua New Guinea, eventually made its way to South Asia, and picked up crystallization techniques there before spreading to Persia by around the sixth century, according to Wikipedia’s history of sugar.
Arab armies conquered Persia in 642 CE and got their first real exposure to refined sugar in the process. From there, they carried the crop with them as their empire grew, planting it across Mesopotamia, the Levant, Egypt, North Africa, and eventually Spain, according to Sacred Footsteps. Growing sugarcane in dry climates required serious irrigation work, and Arab engineers built the systems needed to make it possible, pushing sugar cultivation as far west as Sicily by the 10th century.
The word sugar changed shape with every border it crossed, tracking the same path as the crop itself. Sanskrit “sharkara” became Persian “shakar,” which became Arabic “sukkar,” which turned into Medieval Latin “succarum,” then French “sucre,” and finally English “sugar,” according to the Südzucker Group. European Crusaders got their own first taste of refined sugar in the Levant during the 11th and 12th centuries and brought both the substance and its borrowed name back home. For generations after that, sugar stayed a luxury reserved for the wealthy, long before it became the everyday kitchen staple it is now.
Three Words, Three Very Different Journeys
Algebra, coffee, and sugar didn’t travel the same road to get into English. Algebra came from scholars translating textbooks. Coffee came from monks trying to stay awake through the night. Sugar came from armies and traders chasing a valuable crop across continents. All three are Arabic in origin, and all three are used constantly today, so quietly that almost nobody stops to ask where they came from.
That’s really the pattern behind most of the hundreds of Arabic-origin words scattered through English. They arrived through trade routes, translated textbooks, and centuries of contact between cultures, and they stuck around because they were useful. The words got absorbed so completely that they stopped sounding foreign at all.
