When Pakistan Stood with Algeria in Its Fight for Independence

History often remembers the nations that won their freedom, but less attention is given to those that stood beside them along the way. During Algeria’s long struggle against French colonial rule, one of its earliest and most steadfast supporters was Pakistan. Long before Algeria achieved independence in 1962, Pakistan had become one of the strongest international voices backing its right to self-determination, forging a friendship that continues to this day.

Algeria’s Long Fight for Freedom

France occupied Algeria in 1830, and over the next century the territory was treated not merely as a colony but as an extension of France itself. However, demands for independence grew steadily, culminating in the outbreak of the Algerian War of Independence in 1954. Led by the National Liberation Front (FLN), the conflict lasted nearly eight years and became one of the most significant anti-colonial struggles of the twentieth century, eventually securing Algeria’s independence on 5 July 1962.

Pakistan Raises Its Voice

Barely a decade after gaining its own independence, Pakistan emerged as a vocal supporter of Algeria’s cause. At the 1955 Bandung Conference and later at the United Nations, Pakistani representatives consistently argued that the Algerian people had the right to determine their own future. These diplomatic efforts reflected Pakistan’s broader support for decolonisation and the independence of nations still under foreign rule.

Pakistan also became one of the first countries to recognise the Provisional Government of the Algerian Republic in exile on 19 September 1958 and allowed it to establish a representative mission in Karachi—an important diplomatic milestone years before Algeria formally became independent.

A Passport That Carried a Revolution

One of the most remarkable yet little-known chapters in this story was Pakistan’s decision to provide diplomatic passports to senior leaders of the Algerian provisional government, including future President Ahmed Ben Bella. These documents enabled Algerian representatives to travel internationally, meet world leaders and campaign for recognition of their struggle at a time when global diplomatic access was crucial.

A Friendship That Endures

When Algeria finally achieved independence in 1962, Pakistan was among the first countries to establish formal diplomatic relations with the new republic. The goodwill built during those difficult years laid the foundation for a relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation in international forums.

Today, the story of Pakistan’s support for Algeria remains one of the lesser-known chapters of modern history. It is a reminder that diplomacy is not measured only by treaties and trade agreements, but also by moments when nations choose to stand for the principles of freedom and self-determination beyond their own borders.
