Obsession Becomes a $400 Million Global Box Office Hit

Horror thriller Obsession has surpassed US$400 million at the global box office, marking a major milestone for the original film and cementing its status as one of the most profitable theatrical releases in recent years.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film has grossed approximately US$403.1 million worldwide, including US$245.3 million from North America and US$157.8 million from international markets. The film achieved the milestone despite being produced on a reported budget of US$750,000, making it one of the highest returns on investment in modern cinema. Industry reports have identified Obsession as the highest-grossing film ever made for under US$1 million.

Written and directed by Curry Barker, Obsession follows Bear, played by Michael Johnston, who uses a mystical object known as the One Wish Willow in an attempt to make his childhood friend Nikki, portrayed by Inde Navarrette, fall in love with him. Instead, the wish triggers a series of supernatural events as Nikki’s affection develops into a dangerous obsession. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2025 before being acquired by Focus Features for distribution. It was released in U.S. theatres on May 15, 2026, and gradually gained momentum through positive audience response and sustained box office performance.

Unlike many horror films that experience significant declines after their opening weekend, Obsession maintained strong ticket sales throughout its theatrical run. Industry reports noted that the film recorded unusually small week-to-week drops, with one weekend seeing a decline of only seven per cent, reflecting continued audience interest several weeks after release.

The film’s commercial performance has also placed it among the highest-grossing horror films worldwide. According to industry data, Obsession is now ranked among the top-performing horror releases of all time at the global box office, despite costing only a fraction of the budgets typically associated with major studio productions.

The success of Obsession has drawn attention to the commercial potential of original, low-budget horror films. In recent years, the genre has consistently delivered strong box office results, with several independently produced titles achieving significant commercial success through positive word-of-mouth and modest production costs.

In addition to its theatrical earnings, Obsession has expanded its audience through premium video-on-demand availability in select markets while continuing to generate revenue in cinemas. Its sustained performance has contributed to its overall global earnings crossing the US$400 million mark. With worldwide ticket sales now exceeding US$400 million, Obsession has become one of 2026’s biggest box office success stories. Its theatrical run demonstrates the continued commercial viability of original horror films and highlights the significant financial returns that can be achieved through modest production budgets combined with strong audience engagement
