The world is watching. And right now, it is watching Pakistan.
At the center of this attention is Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah, NI(M), the Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces. According to Google Trends, he became the most searched person on the planet in just 24 hours. Why? Because Pakistan stepped into a mediating role between the United States and Iran at a time when the world was bracing for the worst. Everyone wanted to know who is leading from the front.
Asim Munir’s Military Career
Asim Munir is the first army chief in Pakistan’s history to have headed both Military Intelligence and the Inter-Services Intelligence. That intelligence background is a big part of why his diplomatic role today carries so much weight. During the 2025 India-Pakistan conflict, it was under his command that Pakistan launched Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. The federal cabinet unanimously promoted him to Field Marshal for his courage and leadership. Only one other person in Pakistan’s history has held that rank. Ayub Khan. He was also appointed the country’s first ever Chief of Defence Forces. A Hafiz-e-Quran, he committed the Holy Quran to memory during a posting in Saudi Arabia.
Why the World Is Searching His Name
Tensions between the US and Iran had reached a dangerous point. Many feared a wider conflict. Pakistan stepped in. Field Marshal Asim Munir played a central role in delivering a US proposal to Tehran and helping open backchannels between both sides. That move put Pakistan right at the center of one of the biggest diplomatic efforts the world has seen in years. Even US President Donald Trump praised him publicly, calling him a great fighter.
