Abu Dhabi has announced plans for Sphere Abu Dhabi, a massive immersive entertainment venue set to be built on Yas Island and completed by the end of 2029. The project, valued at approximately $1.7 billion, will become the second Sphere venue in the world after the Las Vegas Sphere and the first to open outside the United States. The development is being led through a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) and Sphere Entertainment Co.
The venue will be located between Yas Mall and SeaWorld Abu Dhabi on Yas Island, one of the UAE capital’s largest entertainment and tourism hubs. Officials say the project is expected to strengthen Abu Dhabi’s position as a global destination for live entertainment, tourism, culture, and large-scale events.
Sphere Abu Dhabi will have a seating capacity of up to 20,000 people, depending on the event configuration. Similar to the Las Vegas Sphere, the venue will feature advanced immersive technologies, including large-scale LED visuals, next-generation audio systems, and multi-sensory storytelling experiences.
According to DCT Abu Dhabi, the venue will host three primary categories of events. These include immersive Sphere Experiences, concert residencies, and marquee events such as sports spectacles, conferences, product launches, and global entertainment productions.

The project is also expected to play a major role in showcasing Emirati culture and local talent. Officials stated that Sphere Abu Dhabi will feature content centered on Emirati storytelling, heritage, and artistic expression. Emirati artists’ work is expected to appear on the venue’s exterior LED display, known as the Exosphere, while local and regional musicians are also expected to perform alongside international artists.
Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, described the project as a reflection of Abu Dhabi’s long-term ambitions in tourism, culture, and entertainment. He stated that the investment demonstrates the emirate’s commitment to becoming a global cultural and entertainment destination.
The development is part of Abu Dhabi’s wider strategy to diversify its economy and expand its tourism sector beyond oil revenues. Yas Island has already become home to several internationally recognized attractions, including Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi, Yas Waterworld, SeaWorld Abu Dhabi, and Etihad Arena. Sphere Abu Dhabi is expected to further strengthen the island’s global appeal and increase international visitor traffic.
Officials have also stated that the venue’s operations are expected to create thousands of local jobs once completed. The project is anticipated to support employment across hospitality, entertainment, tourism, operations, construction, and event management sectors.
Infrastructure planning for the project will involve multiple Abu Dhabi government entities and organizations, including the Department of Municipalities and Transport, the Integrated Transport Centre, the Department of Energy, Etihad Rail, TAQA, and Aldar. Authorities say the collaboration will ensure road access, transportation systems, and surrounding infrastructure are fully integrated with Yas Island’s existing attractions and facilities.
The first Sphere venue opened in Las Vegas in September 2023 and quickly gained international attention because of its giant spherical structure and immersive digital experiences. Sphere Abu Dhabi will follow a similar concept while also incorporating regional cultural elements tailored to the UAE and Middle East audience.
Tourism and travel industry analysts believe the new venue could significantly increase Abu Dhabi’s global visibility in the entertainment sector. The project is also expected to complement other major developments in the emirate, including the Saadiyat Cultural District and the upcoming Disney theme park resort planned for Yas Island.
With construction expected to continue over the next several years, Sphere Abu Dhabi represents one of the UAE’s most ambitious entertainment projects to date. Once operational, the venue is expected to become a landmark attraction capable of hosting globally recognized events while further establishing Abu Dhabi as a leading destination for tourism, culture, and immersive entertainment.
