Lewis Hamilton achieved a major milestone in his Formula One career by securing his first Grand Prix victory for Ferrari at the 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. The win marked Hamilton’s 106th career Formula One victory and his first since joining Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season. It also ended a winless streak that had lasted more than 40 races and nearly two years, making the result one of the most significant moments of the 2026 Formula One season.
The victory came during the seventh round of the 2026 Formula One World Championship at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain. Hamilton crossed the finish line ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell and McLaren’s Lando Norris, creating the first all-British Formula One podium since 1968. The result was particularly notable because it ended Mercedes’ unbeaten run during the 2026 season and provided Ferrari with its first race victory of the year.
Hamilton joined Ferrari in January 2025 following a highly publicized departure from Mercedes, the team with which he won six of his seven world championships. Expectations surrounding the move were immense, but Hamilton’s first season with Ferrari proved challenging as the team struggled to consistently compete at the front of the grid. Despite showing flashes of competitiveness and securing podium finishes, a Grand Prix victory had remained elusive until Barcelona.
The race itself was heavily influenced by strategy. Ferrari opted for an aggressive three-stop approach, which ultimately proved decisive. While Hamilton started near the front of the grid, the team’s strategy allowed him to remain in contention throughout the race. A key moment occurred when a Virtual Safety Car period was triggered following Fernando Alonso’s retirement. Hamilton was able to pit during the caution period while maintaining track position, giving him a significant advantage over his rivals. The strategy enabled him to emerge ahead and control the closing stages of the race.

Mercedes driver George Russell, who had started from pole position, finished second after leading parts of the race. McLaren’s Lando Norris completed the podium in third place. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who had won five consecutive races prior to Barcelona, suffered an electrical problem and was forced to retire from the race. Antonelli’s retirement had important championship implications, as it allowed Hamilton to significantly reduce the points gap in the drivers’ standings.
The victory carried additional historical significance. At 41 years old, Hamilton became the oldest Formula One race winner since 1970. The triumph also represented Ferrari’s return to the top step of the podium after a lengthy wait and reinforced the belief that Hamilton and Ferrari are now genuine contenders in the 2026 championship battle. Following the race, Hamilton moved into second place in the championship standings, although he remained behind Antonelli.
For Hamilton, the victory was especially meaningful because of his long-standing admiration for Ferrari. Throughout his career, he had often spoken about the prestige associated with racing for Formula One’s most successful and historic team. After the race, he described the achievement as a dream come true and emphasized the effort that had gone into building competitiveness within the team. The win validated Ferrari’s decision to sign the seven-time world champion and demonstrated that the partnership is beginning to deliver the results many expected when the move was first announced.
The Barcelona victory has also reshaped perceptions of the 2026 title race. Ferrari introduced performance improvements that appeared to significantly enhance the SF-26’s competitiveness, particularly in cornering performance. Combined with Hamilton’s experience and race management skills, the result has increased expectations that Ferrari could challenge Mercedes more consistently throughout the remainder of the season. Team principal Fred Vasseur, however, has urged caution, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus race by race despite the breakthrough result.
