The first Game of Thrones film now has a director and a 2029 release date. Here is what fans need to know.

Dragons are coming to the big screen. After years of rumors, false starts and fan speculation, the first feature film set in the world of Game of Thrones finally has a director and a date on the calendar.

“Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest” will open in theaters on June 1, 2029, Deadline reported this week. It will be the franchise’s first movie after more than a decade of storytelling on television through “Game of Thrones,” “House of the Dragon” and “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.”

The project was first revealed by Warner Bros. at CinemaCon in April 2026, when it appeared on the studio’s slate for 2027 and beyond without a director or release date attached. This week’s update is the clearest sign yet that the film is moving forward.

The movie will also take fans further back in Westeros history than ever before, to the moment the Targaryen dynasty seized power and the Iron Throne was born.

An ‘AEGON'S CONQUEST’ film will release on June 1, 2029 in theaters.

Aegon’s Conquest Release Date and Director Owen Harris

Owen Harris will direct the film. He is already familiar with Westeros, having directed episodes of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” and he is also known for celebrated episodes of “Black Mirror,” including “San Junipero,” “Be Right Back” and “Striking Vipers.”

The screenplay is being written by Beau Willimon, the creator and showrunner of “House of Cards” and a writer on the “Star Wars” series “Andor.” The film will draw on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the book that chronicles the history of House Targaryen.

The film is in early development. No cast has been announced, and there is no confirmed date for filming to begin.

Aegon’s Conquest Plot: The Story of Aegon Targaryen and His Dragons

The film centers on Aegon I Targaryen, the founder of the Targaryen dynasty, whose story takes place about 300 years before the events of “Game of Thrones.” Fans of the series have heard his name many times, but the character has never appeared on screen.

Warner Bros. has announced that a #GameOfThrones movie is set for theatrical release on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris will direct 'Aegon’s Conquest,' with a script by Beau Willimon.

In Martin’s books, Aegon invades Westeros alongside his two sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, each riding a dragon. Aegon’s mount is Balerion the Black Dread, while Visenya rides Vhagar and Rhaenys rides Meraxes.

The conquest includes some of the most famous events in the franchise’s history, such as the burning of Harrenhal and the Field of Fire. Six of the seven kingdoms fall under Targaryen rule, with Dorne holding out. Aegon then forges the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies, and his landing in Westeros becomes the starting point of the calendar used throughout the series.

Aegon’s Conquest Cast and What’s Next for the Game of Thrones Franchise

The wait for the film will be filled with more television. “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” Season 2 is set for 2027, followed by “House of the Dragon” Season 4 in 2028, putting the film at the end of a busy few years for the franchise.

The biggest open question is who will play Aegon. With casting yet to begin, speculation is already running high among fans eager to see who will be the first to sit on the Iron Throne.
