Taylor Swift became the most-awarded artist in VMA history as Madonna won her first Moon Person in 27 years.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards delivered a night of history. At the ceremony held on Sunday, September 27, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, Taylor Swift and Madonna dominated the evening, with Swift cementing her place as the most decorated artist the show has ever seen. Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony.
Madonna entered the night as the leading nominee with 13 nominations, followed by Swift with 11. Both delivered on their promise, walking away with multiple awards and rewriting parts of the VMA record books in the process. Nirvana received this year’s Video Vanguard Award.
Swift had already been announced as the recipient of the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new award recognizing artists whose work behind the camera has advanced the art of the music video. Actress Dakota Johnson presented her with the honor, which came just ahead of the debut of Swift’s new self-directed video for “Patient Zero.”

Swift’s haul on the night made her the sole holder of the record for the most VMA wins ever. With her competitive victories and the new Artist Director Honors, her total reached 33 Moon Persons, moving her clear of Beyonce at the top of the all-time list.
Her biggest win of the night came in the Video of the Year category, which she took for “The Fate of Ophelia.” The victory extended her record in the category to six, and she used her acceptance speech to pay tribute to Dolly Parton, whom she called the ultimate showgirl. She did not win Best Pop, as that award went to LISA for “Dream” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, which ended her chance to break her tie with Ariana Grande in the category. She also did not win Artist of the Year.
