Pakistan has secured its first medal of the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Boxer Fatima Zahra reached the women’s 60kg semifinals in Glasgow on July 28, guaranteeing at least a bronze.

She beat New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson by unanimous decision at SEC Hall 5. All five judges scored the three-round bout in her favour, at 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Under the Commonwealth Games boxing format, both losing semifinalists receive bronze. Her place in the last four therefore confirms the medal. It also makes her the first woman from Pakistan to win a boxing medal at the Games.

Fatima held the initiative across all three rounds. Four of the five cards read 29-28, with one judge awarding her every round at 30-27.

The win followed a dominant opening bout. In the round of 16 on July 24, she faced Lesotho’s Realibohile Segoete, and the referee stopped the contest.

Fatima trained at the national camp in Islamabad under coach Nisar Khan, alongside the four other Pakistani boxers in the squad. She won bronze at the 2025 Islamic Solidarity Games in Riyadh and has been the undefeated national featherweight champion since 2021. She has also competed at the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, the first round of Olympic qualifiers in Italy, a Youth World Championship qualifier in Spain, and the Belt and Road International Boxing Gala in China.

Pakistan last won a Commonwealth Games boxing medal in 2014, when Mohammad Waseem took silver in the 52kg category, losing the final to Australia’s Andrew Moloney. Those Games were also held in Glasgow.

Waseem and England-born Haroon Khan each won bronze at Delhi in 2010. Pakistan’s only Commonwealth boxing gold came at Manchester in 2002, when Haider Ali won the featherweight title, beating India’s Som Bahadur Pun 28-10 over four rounds.

All previous medals in the discipline were won by men. Pakistani women first entered the boxing competition at the 2022 Games in Birmingham, when Mehreen became the first to compete and lost in the round of 16.

Pakistan’s most decorated boxer remains Syed Hussain Shah, who won bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. It is still the country’s only Olympic boxing medal. Shah grew up in Lyari in Karachi and trained by punching garbage bags.

Fatima Zahra’s Semifinal Against Canada’s Marie Al-Ahmadieh

Fatima meets Canada’s Marie Al-Ahmadieh in the women’s 60kg semifinal on July 31 at 11.30pm.

A win would place her in the gold medal bout and make her the first Pakistani woman to reach a Commonwealth Games boxing final. A defeat would confirm the bronze she has already secured.

Pakistan is competing at the 2026 Games with a five-strong boxing contingent. Fatima’s result is the country’s first podium finish of the event, and the first Commonwealth Games boxing medal for Pakistan in twelve years.
