Press tour clips, record audience scores, meme takedowns and a leaked bootleg have kept Nolan’s epic trending for three straight weeks.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey opened on July 17 and has stayed at the top of the online conversation ever since, though not always for reasons connected to the film itself. Compilation videos of the cast press tour have racked up views on YouTube and TikTok, and reaction threads have filled Reddit and X.
The film’s ensemble includes Matt Damon as Odysseus, Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena and Lupita Nyong’o in a dual role as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra. Nearly all of them have contributed a clip that circulated on its own.
Alongside the press tour, three separate storylines have kept the film trending: a record-setting audience score, a wave of copyright takedowns aimed at fan memes, and a high-quality bootleg that reached millions of viewers before it was removed.
Robert Pattinson Leads the Viral Press Tour Moments
The most reshared clip came from a promotional game called Who Even Am I, in which cast members guess which celebrity photo they are holding. Holding up his own picture, Pattinson asked, “Am I ugly?” The moment caught the room off guard and spread quickly, with fans praising him for steering interviews into unrehearsed territory.
Pattinson featured in a second widely shared clip. When an interviewer described Zendaya as a goddess and asked what made her right for Athena, Hathaway and Holland answered earnestly while Pattinson began smiling behind them. Holland broke into laughter mid-answer.
Damon supplied one of the funnier behind-the-scenes stories on The Tonight Show. He told Jimmy Fallon he had watched Holland place a hand on his heart from across a stretch of water and read it as a father-son salute, so he returned the gesture. Holland was actually adjusting a costume that was choking him. Damon, who is nearsighted, noted the moment did not make the final cut.
A WIRED cast interview produced another. While the group worked through the timeline of Homer’s poem, Damon pointed out that Odysseus was away from Ithaca for two decades, which prompted Holland to work out on camera that Telemachus would have been older than he had played him.
Reading a fan question about whether Athena loved Odysseus romantically, Holland cut in with “No, because she’s married to me.”
Fan Reactions Set a Record for a Nolan Film
The audience response has been measurably stronger than the critical one. The Odyssey holds a 95 percent Tomatometer score from more than 400 critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 97 percent Popcornmeter score from verified audience ratings. That is the highest audience score of Nolan’s career, ahead of The Dark Knight, Memento and Batman Begins, which sit at 94 percent.
Opening-night audiences gave the film an A CinemaScore. It closed its first weekend with $124.5 million domestically and $264.1 million worldwide, the biggest global debut of Nolan’s career, against a reported production budget of $250 million.
What ties the film’s success together is the cast themselves. These are actors who have not only won audiences over on screen, but whose warmth, humour and easy chemistry off screen have made them just as loved in interviews as in the film. Every playful exchange and unscripted moment has sent fans back to their seats and across social media, turning the press tour into an event of its own.
The Odyssey may be Nolan’s most ambitious film yet, but it is the people bringing it to life, on screen and off, who have truly captured hearts this summer.
