Christopher Nolan finally dropped the full trailer for The Odyssey this week, and the reaction online has been split right down the middle.
The two-minute footage, released by Universal Pictures after Nolan unveiled it on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, gives audiences their longest look yet at the $250 million adaptation of Homer’s epic.
There is sweeping ocean photography, a glimpse of the Cyclops, the Trojan Horse, Robert Pattinson smirking like a villain, and Matt Damon looking suitably weather-beaten as Odysseus.
But somehow, the whole conversation has narrowed down to one three-letter word.
Why “daddy” broke the Odyssey trailer reactions online
In the trailer, Pattinson’s Antinous tells Tom Holland’s Telemachus, “You’re pining for a daddy you never knew.” Later, Holland says earnestly, “My dad is coming home.” For a chunk of the internet, that was the moment the spell broke.
Clips of the line spread fast on X, TikTok, and Reddit. Some viewers thought it sounded too modern for a story rooted in the 8th century BC. Others did not care at all. A few zoomed in on something else entirely.
Fan reactions ranged from jokes about Pattinson and Holland’s on-screen dynamic to criticism that the dialogue felt out of place in an ancient epic. One recurring complaint was Damon’s rallying cry “Let’s go!”, which some compared to a sports coach rather than a Greek king leading an army.
Then there are the accents. Holland and Pattinson, both London-born, are using American dialects, while Jon Bernthal’s delivery as Menelaus has also drawn attention online for sounding unusually modern. The decision appears consistent across the cast, likely influenced by Damon’s own American accent.
Nolan addressed the approach during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, explaining that he wanted audiences to engage with the material in a fresh way. Supporters online have echoed that sentiment, arguing that stylistic liberty is part of adapting a text as old and widely interpreted as The Odyssey.
Where is Zendaya in the Odyssey trailer?
Another major talking point was Zendaya’s absence from the trailer.
Zendaya is confirmed to play Athena, a central figure in the story who guides Odysseus and Telemachus. Despite her importance in the narrative, she does not appear in the trailer at all. Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron are also largely absent, with Theron only briefly glimpsed as Calypso.
Some fans expressed frustration, while others interpreted the decision as a deliberate marketing strategy to preserve mystery around key characters. The trailer instead focuses heavily on large-scale visuals, including sea voyages and the Trojan Horse sequence.
Reports and fan speculation suggest Nolan may be deliberately withholding the gods’ appearances to maintain narrative intrigue, especially given Athena’s transformative role in the original epic. Online discussions have also circulated alleged behind-the-scenes images, fueling theories about how her character will be introduced.
What the Odyssey reactions say about the hype
Despite the debate, the trailer has clearly achieved its purpose: attention.
Social media reactions have ranged from meme-driven criticism of specific lines to praise for its scale and visual ambition. Ludwig Göransson’s score has been widely praised, and the cinematography by Hoyte van Hoytema has drawn consistent acclaim for its IMAX-shot seafaring imagery.
The film features a large ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, and Elliot Page.
It is also the first film shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, and is set for release on July 17, the same day as Spider-Man: Brand New Day, adding an unusual box office overlap for Holland.
Whether the film ultimately justifies its stylistic choices or becomes defined by early trailer discourse remains to be seen, but one thing is already clear: Nolan’s Odyssey has people talking.
