Karachi Kafe in New Jersey Is Winning Hearts

When Pakistani expats in the United States miss home, they do not just miss the food. They miss the chaos of Tariq Road on a Friday night, the sound of a pressure cooker going off in someone's aunt's kitchen, the smell of biryani that hits you before you even open the door, and that very Pakistani instinct to feed anyone who walks through the door, no questions asked. Karachi Kafe in Voorhees, New Jersey is carrying all of that across the ocean, and the world is taking notice.

A photo of a sign inside the restaurant recently stopped people mid-scroll on X. The sign, framed in green and white with the Pakistani crescent and star on either side, reads:

"My dear, if you are hungry and can't afford to buy food, please don't be shy. Your food is on Karachi Kafe. Just ask for a free box. We won't ask a single question."

The post drew thousands of reactions, with people from across the world praising the gesture as a reflection of true Pakistani hospitality.

For anyone who has grown up in Karachi, the sentiment is instantly familiar. In Pakistan, no guest leaves hungry. Karachi Kafe is simply making sure that rule applies in New Jersey too.

The Woman Behind Karachi Kafe

Karachi Kafe was founded by Anny Khan, a Pakistani entrepreneur, television host, and media personality who immigrated from Karachi to the United States nearly two decades ago as a child. Khan is also the founder of Zas Pages Magazine, a publication she has run for over five years that covers the social, cultural, and entrepreneurial stories of the South Asian community in America. She has hosted shows including The Anny Khan Show, Chit Chat with Anny Khan, and Hello America with Anny Khan on ARY Digital Network.

She opened Karachi Kafe with one goal: to bring the street food, the gourmet cooking, and the soul of Karachi to her city.

In response to the viral attention the sign received, Khan posted on Facebook:

"We really appreciate all the love. This is a woman-owner business and our founder believes in giving back to the community." She also confirmed the restaurant was not accepting donations from people who offered to contribute after the story broke.

A Piece of Karachi Planted in South Jersey

Walk into Karachi Kafe at 2999 E Evesham Road and you are not in New Jersey anymore. The walls are covered in truck art murals, Urdu poetry, and posters of Pakistani cricket legends and national heroes. The Pakistani flag is displayed throughout. Anny Khan built what she calls a "patriotic wall," where Urdu quotes run across the walls and customers stop to read them out loud to their children.

According to a report by Daily Pakistan, Pakistani parents in America regularly pause at that wall to teach their kids Urdu during their visits. That combination of food, culture, and community is exactly what makes Karachi Kafe more than just a restaurant.

The Menu That Will Make You Call Your Ami

The menu at Karachi Kafe reads like a love letter to Karachi street food and home cooking combined. Start with gol gappa, papdi chaat, aloo samosa, or chicken lollipop. The nashta section alone is worth the drive, with karachi nashta that includes halwa poori, chana, and aloo sabzi, plus a half-fry anda paratha for when the desi breakfast craving hits at full force.

For mains, it is the full lineup. Beef nihari, matka daleem, paya, mutton karahi, boneless chicken tikka karahi, chicken charsi karahi, and black pepper chicken karahi. The chicken biryani has a loyal following among regulars who order it every single week. There is also a full grilled section with chicken malai kabab, beef seekh kabab, beef bihari boti, mixed tandoori, and a whole grill chargha. The entire menu is fully halal.

Dessert brings falooda, ras malai, shahi kheer, gajar halwa, gulab jamun, and a gola ganda loaded. Drinks include Pakola, Kashmiri chai, mango sweet lassi, namkeen lassi, and tandoori kulhad chai. For special orders with 24-hour advance notice, the restaurant does a full tandoori raan and a goat sajji. Yes, goat sajji in New Jersey.
