Warren Buffett Most Generous US Billionaire With $68.3 Billion in Lifetime Donations

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett continues to stand out among the world’s wealthiest individuals not only for his financial success but also for his record-breaking philanthropy. According to a recent ranking by Forbes, Buffett is the most generous billionaire in the United States, with lifetime charitable donations totaling approximately $68.3 billion, the highest amount given by any individual in the country.

The ranking is part of Forbes’ annual list of America’s Top 25 Philanthropists, which measures generosity primarily through lifetime giving. Collectively, the individuals on the list have donated about $275 billion to charitable causes, reflecting a significant increase in philanthropic contributions in recent years.

Buffett’s donations alone account for a substantial portion of this figure, reinforcing his reputation as one of the most influential philanthropists of the modern era.

Lifetime Giving and Scale of Donations

Buffett’s lifetime charitable contributions have reached $68.3 billion, representing roughly 32% of his total net worth. His philanthropy primarily focuses on healthcare initiatives and poverty alleviation, areas that receive significant support from the foundations he funds.

The scale of his giving has steadily increased over time. In 2025, Buffett donated $6 billion worth of Berkshire Hathaway shares, marking one of the largest annual donations in his philanthropic career. The gift consisted of more than 12 million Class B shares of Berkshire Hathaway stock, distributed among several foundations.

Most of the shares, about 9.43 million, were donated to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Trust, while the remainder went to family-led charitable organizations including the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, the Sherwood Foundation, the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, and the NoVo Foundation. This donation pushed Buffett’s total charitable giving to well above $60 billion, a figure that exceeds the gross domestic product of many countries when considered on its own.

Long-Term Approach to Philanthropy

Buffett began systematically donating large portions of his wealth in 2006, when he announced plans to distribute most of his fortune to charitable foundations over time. Since then, he has donated billions of dollars each year, largely in the form of Berkshire Hathaway shares.

This method allows foundations to gradually convert shares into funding for social initiatives, while also enabling Buffett to maintain significant ownership in Berkshire Hathaway during his lifetime. Even after major donations, Buffett still holds a sizeable stake in the conglomerate, which owns businesses such as GEICO, BNSF Railway, and significant shareholdings in companies like Apple and American Express.

The investor, often referred to as the “Oracle of Omaha,” built Berkshire Hathaway into a trillion-dollar conglomerate after taking control of the company in 1965.

The Giving Pledge Initiative

Beyond his own donations, Buffett has also played a key role in encouraging philanthropy among other billionaires. In 2010, he joined forces with Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates to launch The Giving Pledge, an initiative that encourages the world’s wealthiest individuals to commit at least half of their fortunes to charitable causes during their lifetimes or in their wills. Since its launch, the pledge has attracted dozens of billionaires globally, helping to normalize large-scale philanthropic commitments among the ultra-rich.

Comparison With Other Philanthropists

While Buffett ranks first on the Forbes list, several other high-profile philanthropists also feature prominently. Bill Gates ranks second, having donated tens of billions of dollars primarily through the Gates Foundation, which funds global health, disease prevention, and poverty reduction programs.

Other major donors include MacKenzie Scott, George Soros, Michael Bloomberg, and Mark Zuckerberg with his wife Priscilla Chan, each of whom has contributed billions to initiatives ranging from education and public health to climate action and social justice programs.

However, several of the world’s wealthiest individuals, including Elon Musk, Larry Page, and Larry Ellison, do not appear on the ranking, primarily because their lifetime donations have not yet reached the threshold required to qualify among the top 25 U.S. philanthropists.

Philanthropy in the United States

The Forbes ranking also highlights broader trends in American philanthropy. Despite rapid growth in billionaire wealth, the proportion of wealth donated by many individuals remains relatively small compared with their total fortunes. According to analyses of philanthropic trends, the combined wealth of leading U.S. billionaires has grown significantly in recent years, even as charitable giving has increased more gradually. Nonetheless, large donations from wealthy individuals continue to fund major initiatives in healthcare, scientific research, education, and humanitarian programs around the world.

Ongoing Donations and Future Plans

Buffett, who is now in his nineties, has continued to accelerate the pace of his giving in recent years. He has indicated that the majority of his remaining fortune will eventually be donated, with funds distributed through trusts overseen by his children.

Under this plan, most of Buffett’s wealth will be transferred to philanthropic causes after his death, with the funds expected to be allocated over roughly a decade by the trustees. The investor has also confirmed that donations to the Gates Foundation will cease after his death, with future contributions directed through family-managed trusts.

A Record of Unprecedented Giving

Buffett’s philanthropic record sets him apart from most other billionaires. By donating tens of billions of dollars during his lifetime, he has created one of the largest personal charitable legacies in modern history. With lifetime giving exceeding $68 billion and counting, Buffett remains a central figure in global philanthropy. His donations have funded programs addressing global health, poverty, education, and humanitarian needs, while also encouraging other wealthy individuals to commit larger portions of their fortunes to charitable causes.

As philanthropic giving continues to evolve among the world’s richest individuals, Buffett’s long-term commitment to large-scale donations continues to serve as one of the most prominent examples of wealth redistribution through private philanthropy.
