Indian filmmaker and television host Karan Johar has announced that the upcoming ninth season of his celebrity talk show, Koffee With Karan, will be its final instalment, bringing the programme’s 22-year journey to a close.
Johar made the announcement on September 30, 2026, through an emotional video message reflecting on the show’s beginnings, memorable moments and impact on his career. The final season is scheduled to premiere on October 14, 2026, on JioHotstar.
The filmmaker described the announcement as more personal than professional, explaining that he had reached a point where he felt it was time to conclude the show.
“With a heavy heart, I have to say that this will be my very last season of Koffee With Karan,” Johar said in the announcement.
During the announcement, Johar recalled discussing the idea of hosting a celebrity talk show with his late father, producer Yash Johar, in June 2004.
He explained that his concept involved inviting two celebrities for an informal conversation. However, his father questioned whether audiences would be interested in watching him talk to his friends.
Yash Johar passed away on June 26, 2004, before the show began filming. Karan Johar revealed that the first day of shooting took place on August 16, 2004.
Reflecting on the programme’s journey, he noted that it had completed eight seasons, spanning 22 years and 161 episodes.
He also acknowledged the controversies associated with the show, including discussions surrounding celebrity relationships, professional careers and nepotism in the Hindi film industry.
Koffee With Karan premiered in 2004 on Star World and became known for its celebrity interviews, rapid-fire rounds and candid conversations.
The programme featured prominent actors, filmmakers and other personalities from the Indian entertainment industry. Its first episode featured Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol.
Over the years, the show included conversations about professional experiences, personal relationships, marriages and developments within the film industry.
Its format also generated discussions beyond the programme, with several celebrity remarks becoming subjects of media coverage.
Following its television run, Koffee With Karan moved to the streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar in 2022. The show subsequently continued under the JioHotstar platform.
Across its eight completed seasons, it recorded 161 episodes, according to reports published following Johar’s announcement.
Johar’s announcement indicated that the decision was connected to his personal and professional priorities.
In a separate interview with Variety, the filmmaker discussed his intention to devote more time to directing films and developing stories during the next decade of his career.
He also acknowledged that the programme had become a significant part of his professional identity.
In his farewell message, Johar thanked viewers for continuing to watch the show despite the debates and criticism surrounding certain episodes.
He described the audience’s continued engagement as an important part of the programme’s journey.
The ninth and final season of Koffee With Karan will begin streaming on October 14, 2026, exclusively on JioHotstar.
The official announcement confirmed the premiere date, while a complete guest list has not been established in the announcement reports.
Johar invited viewers to join him for one final season, describing it as an opportunity to celebrate the programme and the audience that supported it throughout its run.
The conclusion of Koffee With Karan will mark the end of a television and streaming programme that began in 2004 and continued across eight completed seasons before its final chapter.
As Johar prepares to return to filmmaking, the ninth season will serve as his final appearance as host of the long-running celebrity talk show.
