Bakari the Gorilla Gets Clean Bill of Health at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

A silverback gorilla set to lead the troop at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has passed his first wellness exam with flying colors.

A silverback gorilla named Bakari has been given a clean bill of health at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. The 21-year-old western lowland gorilla underwent his first full wellness exam at the park, and his care team confirmed he is healthy and ready to settle into his new role as leader of the troop.

Bakari arrived at Animal Kingdom from the Saint Louis Zoo in late June. He spent his first weeks acclimating to his new home and gradually getting to know the family group before making his public debut on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. His arrival marked a significant new chapter for the park’s gorilla family.

Footage of the checkup, shared by Disney, showed a tender side to the exam. Members of the animal care team were seen gently holding the gorilla’s hand and keeping him covered with a blanket during the process. Guests were able to watch the exam through a viewing window at the park’s veterinary facility, offering a rare look at how the animals are cared for.

Bakari the Silverback Gorilla Takes Over as Animal Kingdom Troop Leader

Bakari’s move represents a generational shift for the gorilla family at the park. For nearly three decades, the troop was led by Gino, a beloved silverback who helped shape generations of gorillas since the park opened. Gino died last year at the age of 44, leaving a significant gap at the head of the group.

Disney animal care manager Rachel described the transition as bittersweet. She said saying goodbye to Gino, who had been the troop’s silverback for almost 30 years, was difficult, but that Bakari’s arrival is also exciting. She called him the future of the family troop and expressed hope that he would help welcome new generations of gorillas in the years ahead.

Stepping into that leadership role is a gradual process. Bakari and the female gorillas first spend time seeing one another through a protected viewing area. As they grow more comfortable, the care team can move the introductions forward to allow closer contact and social interaction, all at a pace designed to keep the animals at ease.

Disney’s Western Lowland Gorilla Conservation Effort and World Gorilla Day Donation

Bakari’s transfer is part of a larger mission to protect his species. The move was arranged through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a program that helps maintain genetically diverse populations of western lowland gorillas in managed care. Pairing Bakari with the park’s females could help strengthen the long-term future of the population.

That work matters because western lowland gorillas are critically endangered in the wild. Although they are the most common of the gorilla subspecies, they face serious threats to their survival, which makes managed breeding programs an important safeguard.

To mark Bakari’s arrival and World Gorilla Day on September 24, Disney announced a donation of $100,000 to three African conservation groups that support gorilla care and protection. The gift ties his individual story to the broader effort to protect gorillas in their natural habitat.

Before his move to Florida, Bakari lived in a bachelor group at another accredited zoo, where he socialized with other males. Disney noted that joining a family troop is a natural step for adult male gorillas, and his smooth health check suggests he is well on his way to settling into life at his new home.
