Chinese robotics company UBTech has unveiled a new generation of AI-powered humanoid robots designed for companionship, marking a significant step in the evolution of consumer robotics. Unlike most humanoid robots developed for industrial or manufacturing purposes, the company’s new UWORLD U1 series has been created to provide emotional support and long-term interaction with users.
The robots were introduced during UBTech’s 2026 Global Launch Event in Shenzhen, China. According to the company, the UWORLD U1 series is available in both male and female versions and includes multiple models ranging from robotic torsos to full-sized humanoid companions. Prices start at 119,800 yuan (approximately US$17,000), while the premium model is priced at 990,000 yuan (around US$145,000). Reuters reported that the company has already received more than 13,000 pre-orders following the launch.
One of the standout features of the robots is their human-like appearance. They are equipped with silicone skin designed to resemble human skin and feature expressive facial movements to make interactions feel more natural. The robots are also fitted with cameras, microphones and sensors that enable them to maintain eye contact, recognise gestures and hold conversations with users. UBTech says the robots can identify more than 20 human emotions and respond accordingly using an AI-powered emotional language model. The system is designed to remember previous conversations and user preferences, allowing interactions to become more personalised over time. The company states that these capabilities are intended to create a more engaging and lifelike companionship experience.
The robots are primarily aimed at individuals seeking companionship, particularly older adults living alone. China is experiencing a rapidly ageing population, and companies are increasingly exploring AI technologies that can provide social interaction and emotional support alongside practical assistance.
The launch has generated widespread discussion online, with many social media users referring to the robots as AI “cyber boyfriends” and “cyber girlfriends.” At the same time, experts have raised ethical concerns surrounding privacy, emotional dependence and the broader implications of forming close relationships with artificial intelligence.
Founded in Shenzhen in 2012, UBTech is one of China’s leading robotics companies and is best known for its educational, commercial and industrial robots, including its Walker humanoid series. The introduction of the UWORLD U1 marks the company’s first major expansion into the consumer companion robot market. The launch reflects the growing convergence of artificial intelligence and robotics as companies seek to develop machines capable of more natural human interaction. While companion robots are still an emerging technology, UBTech’s latest product signals an increasing focus on AI-powered solutions designed for use in everyday life rather than solely in industrial settings.
